What's new in NetBackup v10.0 - MSDP Auto Scaling in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)

As customers adopt public and private clouds, there is an increasing demand for Media Server Deduplication Pool (MSPD) to take on key cloud-like characteristics such as easy deployment, cost containment, burst computing, auto-scaling, and Kubernetes support.

MSDP scale-out cluster is based on MSDP. It empowers MSDP with high resilience and scalability capabilities to simplify management and reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for customers.

This feature introduced the deployment of an MSDP in a scale-out approach on the Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) cloud using the Kubernetes operator pattern.

It can run on multiple nodes to represent a single storage pool for NetBackup and customers can seamlessly scale out and scale up an MSDP scale-out cluster on demand. MSDP scale-out cluster automatically does failure detection and self-healing in the background.  Data is persisted on Azure managed disks using the Azure disk CSI storage driver.

Key features include:

  • Backup to local LSU (block storage) and cloud LSU (blob storage) via OST interface,
  • Scale-out and scale-up (storage expansion) with minimal user interference
  • Support up to 16 nodes.
  • Support NBCA secure communication.
  • Support encryption and Key Management Services (KMS)
