It seems each year, the EDGE Summit becomes more like the Super Bowl for E-Discovery professionals in the public sector -- a rare opportunity to explore, learn, and network with government and industry’s top strategists, tacticians, and game-changers.

2012 might have been the best Summit yet, with Former United States Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff keynoting, and the whole sector buzzing about government’s urgent transformation from inefficient, manual processes to automated technologies that pay for themselves in months.

The timing was perfect for this year’s conference, with so much going on in information governance right now. Here are a few of major topics we discussed:

  • The greater focus on lowering costs, increasing resiliency and strengthening Cybersecurity --  including how e-discovery technologies can fill the information gap in the wake of a cyberattack.
  •  The impending federal directive to overhaul records management policies for the first time since the 1950s -- with IT implications for every aspect of an agency’s operations.
  •  The growing discussion on how electronic data impacts criminal law and criminal investigations, and how organizations like the FBI can use technology to process and analyze an immense volume of information.
  • The breakthroughs on artificial intelligence for automatically reading, recognizing, and tagging electronic documents -- which could literally save the government millions, if not billions, of man hours.

Information governance and how government agencies are grappling with a tsunami of information growth is rapidly becoming a bigger and bigger issue, particularly with regards to cost containment. So this summit was a perfect opportunity to wrap our heads around these topics.

We’ll be keeping on top of these issues throughout the year, so be sure to check back here for the latest on information governance.
