Archive cleanup after placeholder deleted

Messner_Michi

Hi,

I saw that in our configuration the option "Delete archived file when placeholder is deleted" is not selected yet.

As we have a big archive I would like to remove data from the archive for already deleted placeholders (which are for sure hundreds of GB)

I talked to our consultant and he said that if we enable the option now, for already deleted placeholders the data will remain in the archive. Is that true? is there any option to clean up the archive? like scanning for all data in the archive if there is still a placeholder ok, otherwise remove data from the archive.

Thanks for help

Best regards Michael

Hi Michael,

If that option was not checked then delete on delete was not configured properly.  There are also other settings that need to be enabled to allow the deletion.

  • At the Site level the option to allow users to delete has to be enabled. This is located on the Archive Settings tab.
  • On the Properties of the file server target the option to Delete archived file must be enabled on the Delete Placeholder tab.
  • The Archive must allow deletion of items. This is set on the Advanced tab of archive Properties.
  • The retention category assigned must allow deletions.

With all of this configured the item in the archive can be deleted when a placeholder is deleted.

There is not a method to retroactively clean up what has already been deleted from the file system.  You could run FSAUtility -c -s \\server\share\folder -r to get a list of placeholders that would be recreated.  You could then take this list and manually remove the items from the archives.  Otherwise, Professional Services may have a method to perform this in a more scripted fashion.

Regards,

Patrick
