I agree with you on that one :) When I was still at Symantec, I did the internal role out and had to write all my own reports useful to administrators and user. That came with a lot of support from the help-desk team and Enterprise Vault Administrators. I worked closely with the VBR team to get all my reports into VBR naively. When I started playing with VBR it was ALPHA, and then later BETA. I did not see the final thing, but can add that VBR for Enterprise Vault was awesome. It is way better than Enterprise Vault Reporting, even thou its v1. The only thing lacking by the time I left was "MSMQ and Service Status" however that's more monitoring than reporting. I had that built into mine and was really useful to see issues starting, and fixing them before they came a problem.
