Backup of Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 and 10.0.4 with Backup Exec

Backing up Enterprise Vault 10.0.3 and 10.0.4 with Backup Exec is not supported with the Agent for applications and databases.

However – there isn't too much work to set up a good backup job for this manually
The problems comes up if the customer has any other applications or databases that is supported by the agent that (s)he wants to back up.

The Agent for Applications and Databases is not connected with any computers, and only installed on the media server. So, let us imagine an environment with Active Directory, SQL, Exchange and Enterprise Vault and we have 3 licenses for applications and databases (because we want to do a manual backup (i.e. Without the use of an agent) of Enterprise Vault).

This is not possible by design, because Backup Exec recognizes that the environment holds some license for applications and databases.
You cannot possibly choose to backup the EV Store folders and indexes (grayed out).

SO – if a Symantec Customer with Enterprise Vault 10.0.3/10.0.4 makes use of Backup Exec 2012 – How are they supposed to protect their Enterprise Vault Environment?

Hi,

Have you look at this post?

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/unable-backup-vault-backup-exec-2012-and-vault-agent

**************

The only way to get it to function properly is by disabling the agent component and doing a file level backup through BE.

Please see the following Symantec technote article for a solution:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/configuring-backup-exec-2010-r3-agentless-enterprise-vault-10...

I hope this helps.

So, by doing this:

1. On your index server, stop 'Backup Exec Remote Agent Service'

2. Go to path where remote agent is installed (for ex. Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\..)

3. Rename bedsev.dll (for ex: bedsev_renemed.dll)

4. Start 'Backup Exec Remote Agent' service.

The agent is disabled on the remote server?

It will not disable the Backup Exec agent, only the detection of Enterprise Vault, so BE does not 'see' that EV is installed.

ok, cool. Is it enough to do this once? Or will we have to do it every time backup exec remote agent is upgraded?

Not 100% sure, but i think every time you upgrade the remote agent.

Let's hope Symantec will fix this issue soon....

It's said to be fixed in next version (early next year)
