Capacity & Performance Sizing for EV10.x on NetApp

Hi,

We are thinking to migrate old EV File and Mail to the latest version and use NetApp filer for its storage, because we want to share the filer with other workloads such as CIFS for file and home directories, DLO storage partitions, and small SQL database dedicated for EV and DLO.

I would appreciate if anyone can share their experience and expertise in designing this type of setup. I have read the EV10 Performance Guide document but still need some more details.

What are the characteristics of Enterprise Vault workload to be considered in designing the storage requirements?

- IO type: random, mixed, or only sequential?

- what is the typical ratio between random read and write operation?

- what is the typical ratio between sequential read and write operation?

- what is the typical IO size (in kilobytes) for random read and write operation?

- what is the typical IO size (in kilobytes) sequential read and write operation?

If I understand it correctly, EV File Archiving storage would be best if it uses CIFS protocol whereas EV Mail Archiving storage would be best if it uses FCP or iSCSI protocol so I believe the requirement would be different.

Via http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125795 you can get to the performance guides for EV.

In the last ones (for 9 and 10) there is a chapter on iops. That can help.
