Cleaning out the journaling mailbox

Hello,

I was wondering how to delete items out of the journaling target Exchange mailbox after the items are pulled in to the EV Journaling archive. Is this generally handled by Exchange or EV?

Thanks!

EV.

But the Vault Store where the journal archive lives .. what is the Safety Copy setting set to?

If it's 'immediately after archive' or 'after backup (immediately for journaling)' the items should be clearing pretty much straight away.

If it's 'after backup' then you'll need to a do a full EV-aware backup.

 full EV-aware backup --> Which software is currently support EV backup ?

Well, pretty much any backup software that can do the task that is needed.

Remember...

Put the Vault Store(s) in Backup Mode (can be done via PowerShell)

Put the Indexes in Backup Mode (can be done via PowerShell)

Backup Indexes

Backup SQL Db's

Backup Vault Store Partition Data

Take Vault Stores and Indexes out of backup mode

You can use any software that can do these things, or that can be wrapped in a script to do these things. About the only thing to be aware of is whether or not the backup software copes with the archive bit, or not.  If not then there is the trigger file mechanism.

In addition Symantec on Page 24 of the Compatibility Charts list their own software which has agents that assist with backup.

Rob, does the script to put the VaultStore and Indexes in backup mode are the same or different script ?

You can put them in the same script, or a different one.  Either way, both should happen before the backup process starts.  Backup then needs to backup the three major components of EV (at least):

* Databases

* Vault Store Partition Data

* Indexes.
