Decommision MS Exchange 2003 - keep EV up

Hello,

I have an old MS Exchagne 2003 Environment (pre-merger) with EV 2007 sp4 that was slated to be imported into our new EV 9.0 Vault. But it has been put on hold.  The plan is to keep this EV 2007 sp4 environment up and simply join the new Windows domain.  I've heard that EV can run fine without Exchange and just looking for steps to decommision it.  I know that EV and SQL will need to stay up.

I figure the high level steps are:

1. Decommision Exchange servers.

2. Join EV server to new Windows domain.

3. Join SQL server to new Windows domain.

I am looking for tech articles that descibe this process.

Thanks-

Here is a TN for the Exchange bit:

How to decommission an Exchange Server from Symantec Enterprise Vault (EV)

Article: TECH50256  |  Created: 2010-01-16  |  Updated: 2011-06-30  |  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH50256

For moving domains it is recommend to get some PS help.

Problem

DOCUMENTATION: Moving Enterprise Vault Servers between Microsoft Active Directory Domains

Solution

Support is often asked how to move Enterprise Vault Servers between domains.  This is indeed possible, however, due to the complex nature, specific planning surrounding individual environments it is not possible for support to provide or validate documentation on how this could be achieved.  Further details on what is covered via Support can be found in your Support Agreement.

RESOLUTION
It is recommended that Professional Services assistance be obtained in order to verify and plan this correctly.

I am slightly confused regarding 1 of the steps to decommsion MS Exchange from EV.  Step 5 says

"If there are any mailboxes associated with the Exchange server to be decommissioned, move the mailbox as per Microsoft's article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821829 "

All of my legacy mailboxes are still asscoiated with this old Exchange server.  There is nowhere I can move them and have no reason to do so.  I simply want to shut down the Exchange server and continue proviiiding users with how this vault currently functions. They simply access through IE or Archive Explorer - not Outlook.  There is no data in Exchange that needs to be kept.

Thanks-

You can skip that step then, the article assumed you would be moving mailboxes.

Sounds like all you need to do is:

Stop the mailbox and journal tasks being deleted:

1. Using the VAC click on Tasks under Enterprise Vault Servers and stop the Archiving or Journal tasks for the target Exchange server to be decommissioned.

2. Once tasks are stopped, right-click the task and select Delete.

Delete archiving targets:

1. Using the VAC click on Archiving Targets > Exchange, expand the domain_name and click on the Exchange server to be decommissioned.

2. Right-click on the Exchange server to be decommissioned and select Delete.
