Delete large Journal Archive

m_mueller

Hello,

I got a question to delete an journal archive with about 5.000.000 Items.

Cause:
We have to retire an old centera.

what happend so far:
We migrated our data two years ago from a centera to a netapp files.
The journal was not completly moved to the netapp.

Now we have to remove the journal archive and shutdown our centera.

We did not expect the deletion of the journal data take so long.
We get about 4000 Items / h deleted. In the best case we need 1250h to delete this (>52 days).

Question:
Any idea to speed up the process?
We tried export to pst and delete -> not working.
There is no need to remove the data from centera.
We want to remove it from the EV (Index, database)

Thank you
Michael

Hi Michael,

To remove the archive without actually deleting it is an action which is not supported. It would mean hacking SQL, possibly causing all kind of issues. If you really want this, you should contact support, see what they can offer.

As for the deletes on the Centera, one thing to take in account is a possible retention clash. Can the items be deleted? Or are you seeing these few items per hour due to Compliance Mode?

Deleting an archive puts pressure on SQL, Indexes and Storage. Is your SQL keeping up?

I could not find info on deleting an archive with Centera as storage, only expiry.

See This and Also this article.

Hello,

you point me to the right direction.
Expiry is the solution. This is a little bit risky because we never used this.
But you could run a report mode before to see what will happened.
This is much faster compare with the normal deletion.
And it’s also a good idea to increase the threads for expiry.
The C clips are removed about 8 times faster like before.
This is not light speed but its ok for my environment.
Thank you

Michael
