Can somebody advise me about the best method to disable archiving for some directories within a Volume that is already being archived.
The Volume has one Archive Point.

I would create a specific Folder Policy and assign it.  Also, be sure to uncheck Use Volume Policy.  As for the placeholders, they will continue to work if you leave them but you could use FSAUtility and restore them if you want.

You could add those folder directories as a tartget and then create a Folder policy and apply it to the folder directory you do not want archived.

This technote is 100% what you are looking for but should help:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/329642.htm

1. Open Vault Admin Console (VAC)
2. Expand "Enterprise Vault" container, then the Directory container, then site container, then "Targets" container, then "File Servers" container, then expand your file server
3. Click on a Target Volume under your file server
4. In the right-hand pane right-click on a Target Folder and select "Properties"
5. If this target is using a folder policy, the option to "Ignore volume rules for this folder" will be available; check this option to ensure only the folder policy will be applied to this target
6. If the target folder is not using the proper 'Folder Policy then click "Select Policy..." button and choose the correct Folder Policy to assign and then click OK. Once done the option for "Ignore volume rules for this folder" will still need to get checked
7. Click "OK"

Should i use a special folder policy or the should i change the settings (Archive this folder and Archive subfolders) in the properties of the new folder to disable archiving for that folder?
When archiving has been disabled, what will be the effect on files/placeholders in that directory that have been archived already? Can those files be placed back tfrom the archive to the directory and removed from the archive?
