We are in the evaluation stages of testing Enterprise vault, I have been asked a question that I cant find the answer to, so far. How does the EV client for outlook determine the location of the EV server. I know it piggybacks off the outlook connection, but where is the EV server info stored?.

When the mailbox is enabled a "hidden message" containing relevant information is placed in the Exchange mailbox by Enterprise Vault. The message contains various desktop settings. It also contains things like the URL for the Enterprise Vault web access application.

within Outlook if you hold ctrl and shift then mouse click an EV button - click vault information you will get a lot of EV details

just to add on to what tony said, it determines the WebApp URL based off of the server that hosts the Storage Service for the vault store the user belongs to
For instance in the old days of EV you could link everyone to
http://evserver01.yourDomain.com
But if you have 12 servers and a ton of users, you wouldn't want them all going to the same server, you would want them to go to their "Home" server, which is the server that hosts their vault store

There is a little description of what the hidden message looks like on the following blog of mine :

It's been on my todo list to explain some of the items a bit more thoroughly!
