EV FSA - archive mixed items by type from the same folder to separate archives

Anyone know of a way to do this with FSA?

  • folder has 2 types of data mixed: e.g.
    • Xml
    • Doc

Is there a way to archive xml to an archive called xml and doc to archive called doc.

As far as I know archive points are at folder level.

Wondering if anyone knows of a workaround.

Thanks,

Fremont

By design, what you are asking for it is not possible with an Enterprise Vault installation out of the box. However, as Ben mentioned, you can try to implement your own API solution or custom filter for FSA. This technote describes what you can and can't do with FSA custom filters:

About custom filters for File System Archiving
http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO57672

Note the last two paragraphs in the technote above:

You can develop proprietary filters for File System Archiving tasks using the File System Filtering API. Generic custom filters for Exchange Server Archiving and Domino Server Archiving are shipped with Enterprise Vault. These allow you to apply filtering without the need to develop filters using the associated filtering API. Currently, no generic custom filter is provided for File System Archiving.

To develop software using Enterprise Vault APIs, your company must be a member of Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP). Information about STEP is available at the following address:

Hi,

As per design Archive point is created on Folder Level..

And its not possible to create Archive based on File Level..

There is not workaround... as this is by Design...

Hi Fremont,

Yourself and AJ are correct, the Archive points are at folder level but it depends on how far you want to go to get a workaround. Obviously you have the situation where you could add two subfolders to that main folder where each type of file gets placed and then EV has an archive for each of these folders but I can see that getting very messy. That also depends on if you have setup the environment yet as well because if you have already started archiving then you will need to carry out restores and clean up work.

Unfortunately there is no way to pick up a file during the archiving run and say 'xml file, goes to xml archive  -  doc file, goes to doc archive', EV sees the folder, knows it has an Archive associated with that folder and archives all docs (according to policy settings) to the associated archive.

You MAY be able to do something with Custom Filters for FSA and a possible addition by a 3rd Party but as a default action, other than the above there isn't anything that can be done as far as I am aware.

Thanks everyone for the guidance.  I will propose custom filtering as the solution.
