EV7 to EV10 Upgrade Path

mlaccs
Not applicable

I am starting a project that will upgrade Exchange from 2003 to 2010 SP3

About 7,000 mailboxes in total.

The Customer has a mix of Outlook 2003 and 2010 clients

They have EV7 with about 1.3TB of archived mail.

I am looking for the upgrade path for the EV environemnt to get to EV10 with the least possible downtme.

So far searching the site has not got me what i am looking for and my guess is that this is not a 20 minute hit enter and wait thing so it would be nice if there was a roadmap that may point me in the right direction as well as the best upgrade strategy and processes.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi mlaccs,

Please, take a look at the upgrade path:

Supported upgrade paths for Enterprise Vault (EV), Compliance Accelerator (CA), Discovery Accelerator (DA) and Discovery Collector (DC).
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH53174

Basically, you need to upgrade to EV 2007 > EV 8 > EV 9 and finally EV 10, In addition, you might need to upgrade the OS as well, since for EV 10 you need Windows Server 2008 R2. If the customer has CA or DA, you need to take in consideration some extra steps to upgrade the environment.

I'd recommend you to review the upgrade guides for each EV version so you can design a complete upgrade plan for this environment:

Enterprise Vault Product Documentation
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC2200

I hope this helps.

Archive Shuttle from QUADROtech offers near-zero downtime for this type of 'upgrade', if you want to go to a whole new environment that houses EV 10. Just another option which is worth considering, perhaps.

You'll need to start planning and upgrading soon, end of support life (last date to contact support) for EV 7 and 7.5 is 14th Dec 2013

One of the (many) keys thing to remember during your upgrade process is if you have to move your databases to a newer version of SQL is to ensure Collations on your new SQL instance is IDENTICAL to your existing SQL otherwise you could be in for a bumpy ride.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH55063

Also, database compatability level should match the version of SQL e.g. 90 for 2005, 100 for 2008

Good luck!
