EV8 SP3 Client error in Outlook "The requested operation is not supported" when creating new Virtual Vault

Hi All,
We've just rolled out EV8 SP3 client to our organisation (upgraded from 7). It has been brought to my attention that if a user in Outlook goes to File | New | Outlook Data FIle, there is now an option to create a new Virtual Vault. When a user tries to select this option Outlook returns an error "The requested operation is not supported". During the few moments before the error appears the Virtual Vault folder can be seen appearing but as soon as you click OK to acknowledge the error it disappears again.

This is occurring for all users. Clients include Office 2003 & 2007 and Windows XP & Windows 7.
I should also mention that we are not trying to deploy Virtual Vault at this stage.
Maybe this is simply a policy setting that needs to be changed? Any suggestions or explanations?

Cheers

You can Edit C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\MAPISVC.INF;

For example, edit out this line as follows;

; EVMSP=Virtual Vault

I'm not sure how to do it via GPO, but on a per workstation basis this works...

Hi ya,

That is not the process to create or enable Virtual Vault.

I highly recommend you give these a read:

Thanks Tony, I realise that isn't the way to do it, but the question still stands, why is the option avialable, and why does it throw an error message?

Hi
You can go to the Policies --Exchange - Desktop -Go to properties of the policies -- Click on Vault cache - Uncheck the option  ---Make Virtual vault available to users .

This is a known issue (i actually found this one when working at symc) , for Outlook 2003 it crashes the client and actually messes up your mapi profile

Thanks Guys,

RahulG - Thanks for the suggestion but the option 'Make Virtual vault available to users' was already disabled

JesusWept2 - That's really interesting to know it's a known issue. Are you able to supply any reference/link to support this? I haven't been able to locate anything.

Cheers

There isn't actually any technote that i know of, all i did was show it to the higher beings above me, but then i knew when i was doing it that it was an aimless excercise and i was being silly, unfortunately end users don't see it that way :)

I will follow up with someone and see if there is any progress that they might be allowed to tell me about, it simply might just come down to user training

Thanks JesusWept2, I might log a support call and see if I can progress it further. Obviously it's not a big problem but if one user found it, more are going to so it would be nice to get to the bottom of it.

RahulG, thanks for the links but neither are relevant to my scenario

yopu would need to check 1st is this issue with most of the users or is it to just one user . If it is for just one user zapping the mailbox might help

Rahul,
The issue isn't with the users archive, the issue is that when they install EV8 SP3 clients and they go to create a new Outlook Data File, it shows that they can create a new Virtual Vault, whether the administrators have enabled them or not for use.

Thanks Batmanisalesbian, commenting out that line from MAPISVC.INF hides the option. Shame I didn't know that before because it could have been an easy change to make as part of the installation package. I think I might have to push out this fix as part of a login script for existing users over a limited time and then update the installation package for any future installations.

Your post is a work around the meets my needs so I will mark it as a solution despite that fact it doesn't actually fix the problem. I am happy with this for now until/if we deploy Virtual Vault

Thanks to everyone for their comments

Contacted Technical Support and they confirmed that it:

" is expected behavior as currently the feature of create a new instance of Virtual Vault is not supported yet, and EV insert the option of Virtual Vault in purpose for indicating the Virtual Vault has been enabled."

"Unfortunately, we do not have a fix to automatically change setting in MAPISVC.INF"

Why symantec would deploy a 'feature' that is not supported and is in plain view of the user is boyond me. Poor form IMHO.
So there it is anyway. Thanks to those who posted on this topic.

personally i think its poor user education if you can't stop your users from clicking on virtual vault
VV is a complex piece of the product and if the worst that happens is someone see's New Virtual Vault then thats fine by me, especially since companies for compliance reasons should be eliminating PST's and really should lock down outlook to not allow them IMHO
