EV9, New Indexing Server

Elio_C

Hi,

I currently have a system with 1 EV9 server running both Storage and Indexing services. I'm looking to move the Indexing to a second server, keeping the Storage service on the first server (both servers and the SQL are on 'fast' network, storage, VMs etc..).

So I've built a second EV9 server, installed the Indexing service and created a closed Index. I'm looking for some help and advice with the below:

  1. Do I just open the Index on server2 and close the Index on server 1? (that simple?)
  2. I understand only new archive Indexes will be created on the new area and the existing ones will continue to update, correct?
  3. Once the Index work is complete I am upgrading to EV10. All of the Indexes are 'Full' and will grow when upgraded to 64-bit. As the storage for Index1 is pretty close to 95% full, how can I move a bunch of individual Indexes from Index1 to Index2 (leaver archives that are kept as reference but not actively used).
  4. I plan to move the closed Index to the second server too, following http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH51450, any practical advice with this?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

When EV Creates an index for a user, it first looks at the Provisioning Group to see what Indexing server has been assigned, if thats unchecked, it then checks the Vault Store to see what Indexing Server has been assigned, if that is also unchecked, it looks at the Computer (EV Server) to check what the default indexing server is.

If none of these are set, then it creates the Index for a user on the Storage server.

So in the provisioning groups, tell it the default index server is server2
Then when users are enabled, their indexes get created on server2, otherwise they will be created on server1 where the storage service is

As for your current issue with running out of space. you are going to have to move the indexes, whether its to a new server or a new hard drive or what not, you cannot simply close the index location, because items will still grow..

You would have to follow these instructions

To move single users indexes from say E:\Enterprise Vault\Indexes\Index1 -> F:\Enterprise Vault\Indexes\Index2

To move an entire Indexing Location (i.e. E:\Enterprise Vault\Indexes\Index1)

When you close and ev9 indexing location, the existing indexes will still continue to grow until a rollover occurs which is 1 billion words indexed by default In EV10 that behavior changes and any open indexes in an open index partition will have a new index create when the index partition is closed The technote that you posted will cover everything you need

Thank you JW3, good to know I'm on the right track.

Any help on points 1 and 3?

Thanks

If you close the index locations on index server one, the data would still continue to grow until a mailbox rollover occurred which for regular users just isn't going to happen So your plan of leaving old users there is good So you'd install EV to the new server and join the site with admin, directory, indexing and task controllers, then you'd create the new indexing root paths and close the old indexing locations on server1 on the provisioning groups you would then assign the default indexing server to be server2,!so that when new users are provisioned and enabled, their indexes are created on server2 Then you'd follow the article to move indexes from one server to another, then when ev10 comes along it will roll over the indexes and start writing everything to a 64 bit index

Thanks again JW3,

How do I 'on the provisioning groups you would then assign the default indexing server to be server2,!so that when new users are provisioned and enabled, their indexes are created on server2' the option I see is 'Override the inherited Indexing Service' in the properties, (also under the Targets, Exchange, Domain, Exchange Server properties).

Where is this defined if I'm overwriting it here?
When this is set, new archives go the new Indexing server and existing remain?

Regarding 'Then you'd follow the article to move indexes from one server to another, then when ev10 comes along it will roll over the indexes and start writing everything to a 64 bit index'

I have to roll to the second index ASAP, running out of space, do I then need to create another set of Indexes or will the closed Indexes convert to 64-bit and grow?
If I need a new third Index can I reclaim the old Index storage.

Lots of questions, I really appreciate the help.

FYI, I've done this several times, both individual and a whole location, without any issues. Just follow the documents, and you'll be fine.

Thank you very much JW3, you've filled in an awful lot of the blanks in the documents and processes. The information about the default Index server is not something I'd come across anywhere in my research.

Final query for you, I've found the Provisioning Group Indexing option and the Computer/EV Server Indexing option but I cannot see a Vault Store setting, how do I get to the setting?

When EV Creates an index for a user, it first looks at the Provisioning Group to see what Indexing server has been assigned, if thats unchecked, it then checks the Vault Store to see what Indexing Server has been assigned, if that is also unchecked, it looks at the Computer (EV Server) to check what the default indexing server is.

Thanks for the support Gertjan, very limited practical information or case studies on this type of, I guess unusual, request.

In EV10, there is a tab on the Vault Store properties called Indexers. There you can define the indexing server. I am not sure about EV9 anymore.
