can anyone tell me if there is a way to find out what mode the service is in, also what does placing it in backup mode actually do?

Placing it in backup mode prevents the placeholder files recalling the data as some backup programs will do this.

You may want to check out Symantec technote 287905 for more information from EV file System Archiving support site.

By the way only users in the EV backup Operators group will not be able to recall files while server is in backup mode. All other users will still have full access to them. This is basically to prevent mass recalls of items from the archive during a backup run.

Would i be right in saying that the backup mode stops retrieving files from the vault during backup, so if you use backup Exec 11d which has a switch to backup data in remote locations (and leave it cleared) there is no need to use the EVFSABackupmode utility

thanks
