there are some customers out there that have been using EV for years and don't know what a lock is, so relax!!

So here's a question, when you hit store in vault, do you see any kind of a pop up or does it go straight to pending and then archive straight away?

If you do not see any prompt or box when you hit store in vault, then it could be you are in HTTP Only Mode which will not show this dialog for you to change the retention category

There are two different modes in Enterprise Vault
Full Client, using RPC/DCOM to connect to the EV Server
HTTP Only, using only HTTP calls to connect to the EV Server

Full Client (RPC/DCOM)
When you use the full client you can potentially change the properties of folders to not allow for archiving, or to change the retention categories etc by going to the Properties of the folder then going to the Enterprise Vault tab.

When you hit Store in vault you can choose which archive to place the item, you can tell it to delete the original or not, create a shortcut or not and change the retention category etc

When you hit Restore From Vault, you can choose to restore the item to a \Restored Items folder or to the original location

HTTP Client (Lite Client)
When you hit store in vault, it will only archive the item to the owners archive and will follow the mailbox rules as to whether or not to create a shortcut.

When you hit restore from vault, it will only restore to the original location

When you go to the properties of your mailbox or the properties of a folder, you will not see the Enterprise Vault tab

What causes HTTP Mode to be used?
If you have the HTTP Only MSI installed, you can *only* use HTTP Only
If you use Public Folders it will always use HTTP connections, never RPC over http
If you are using a shared mailbox or someone elses mailbox in your profile, it will always use HTTP
If you set your Dekstop Policy to have a Client Behavior of HTTP Only then it will use HTTP Only
If your Outlook is set to use RPC over HTTP or Outlook Anywhere, it will always use HTTP

First, it sounds like you are new to EV so I recommend you to get some training.  There are some free tips here:

http://techcenter.symantec.com/ecampus/enterprise?siteName=vena&partNo=DP6002

It sounds like you want two different retention policies for users, is that right?

If so, you need to create two retention category, one for 18 months and one Forever.  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO37179

Then create provisioning groups for your users and assign them to the groups. Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO38085

Or do you mean to have certain emails in one mailbox be retained for 18 months and other emails retained forever?  If that is the case you can create retention folders.  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74355

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your reply. yes, i am new. I even surpised myself that i installed and configured EV 10 properly with a DAG Exchange 2010 just by reading all the whitepapers and what experts recommended. The question you have is what i was looking for. I will try it out in my lab and get back to you. Thanks again.

I created 2 retention policies and created the groups as mentioned above. Both of my retentions has the Whole Exchange organization as targets.  How do you put email items to the proper rentention category? Everytime i choose an email to archive, it keeps going to the Default Retention Category(Forever vault). It does not give me an option to chose which category to put the email item into. Please help. Thank you so much.

If you're talking about manual archiving you will have to take the locks off of the retention category In the retention catogofies property window, then when the user reopened outlook you should find the retention category drop down is no longer greyed out and you can choose whichever category you wish If you're talking scheduled archiving then you would have to use EVPM to assign different retentions to different folders

Thank you for the reply. yes, i am talking about manual archiving. I did take the lock off the retention categories, ran synch, and still no luck. When i click the email item, click store in vault, i don't see an option to select which category i should put the email item to. I don't even see the retention category drop down. Is the drop down in Archive Explorer? man, i'm so lost. Keep in mind this is my first time trying Enterprise Vault. So far, my grade is F for Fail.
