Hello Guy’s
I may be jumping the gun and I dont know if this is the right place to be posting this or not so please bear with me, as prior planning and preperation prevent p poor performance and I need to upgrade our aging EV server anyway I was thinking of staving this off if at all possible until EV10 is released .
EV10 is going to be a 64bit application and I expect many like me will be moving to this platform from a 32bit EV9 server.
This will mean moving our data (currently about 3TB) from the old 32 bit server to the new 64bit server. Will Symantec be providing documentation on how to perform this migration or will be be either simply follwing instructions that already exist for moving data to a new server or engaging in consultancy to perform this task.
Many thanks
Pat

EV10 is not FULLY 64 bit. As far as I know (and you can contact your PM for beta-testing), only indexing is 64bit. As indexing is one of the most intensive parts of EV, that will pose an improvement already.
In the beta-forum for EV10 is a document that describes how to move from 32 to 64bit, but that is basically the standard 'how to move an evserver' thing.
(ie as you wrote, follow instructions that already exist')
For your info, we're moving from 32 to 64bit as we speak, (ev8sp4) and the process is relatively simple. (we're rebuilding servers using same name/ip, so no changes there)

It does not really matter if you move to 64-bit now, or later. The steps involved are the same, and are documented in this forum.
If you do it now, you have the advantage of having an "easy" upgrade to EV10, as your pre-requisites will already be met (be sure to go to 2008 R2 Server!).
Cheers

EV10 will not be a pure 64-bit application. Parts of the product will be 64-bit and so will require a 64-bit OS (2008 R2 as mentioned above)

Yes, there will be documentation which is currently available to beta customers which details the steps to move EV from a 32-bit to a 64-bit OS. We are intending on producing a tool to assist with some of the parts of the move (grabbing settings and reg keys for example) but there is no ETA for the tool right now, so the documentation will be comprehensive enough to allow you to migrate the server without the need for a tool

Seeing as you are talking about EV10 and if you are planning on waiting for it then you wont have long to wait. They are expecting to release it early Q2 if next year

Back in September 2010 I met some of the EV Engineering team at the end of my EV9 course and the subject of EV10 came up. We descussed a number of things one of which was the notional timescales, which were being heavily influenced by the expiry of the AltaVista Search/Index component contract. They were very keen to point out that timescales were not set in stone, and were provided for information only.
I've seen on another discussion that EV10 is now being slated for Q2. This would seem to be at odds with what we discussed back in September although not unexpected (Q1 being April/may/June here).
Whats the plan guys? Do I continue to recommend folks to wait for EV10, or has the product RTM slipped enough to warrant an interim install of EV9?
Thanks in advance.
Andy
