How can we build a new server to use for just SMTP archiving?

Stormonts

We currently have an EV server deployed that is used for vaulting our on premise Exchange server as well as journaling.  We are no migrating to Office 365 and want to build a new EV server that will just handled SMTP journaling.  We built a new Windows server and installed just SMTP journaling on it, however every time we try and create a new vault store group/vault store/partition, EV wants to store it on the "legacy" server where we are doing exchange archiving (even if we use a completely different database).  Is the only way to setup SMTP journaling (only) on a new server to install EV as if it is a brand new site?  The idea is to try to limit the number of changes needed on the legacy EV server while allowing us to easily shut it down once we have everyone moved to Exchange Online and we shut down our on premise mail servers.

You need the Storage Service on the new server too.

Expand server, select Services. Rightclick, select New, then select the Storage Service. You also need Taskcontroller service (if you don't have that already), for the SMTP Archiving task.

Just to be sure, you have added this new server to the existing EV environment yes?

Hello,

I run what you want. Questions:

Which EV version, have you created a new Vault Store database for that new server?

"just smtp journaling", I assume also storage service/taskcontroleer/indexing service?

If you have 'only' created a new ARCHIVE, in the existing Vault Store, then it is 'working as designed'. If you look at Vault Stores under the Vault Store Group, you will see which Computer (= in this case Storage service) is using that one.

If the 2 servers are next to each other in a datacenter (or cupboard :) ), then it should be ok. If you really want to separate (which is best for future, if you perhaps want to expire the old one), you need to create a new Vault Store, a new Vault Store Partition, and a new (or multiple) SMTP Archive(s), where the VS and VSP need to be defined on the SMTP Archiving server.

Every time we try and create a new vault store group/vault store/partition, the storage always points to the old server and not the new one that we just created (which is not what we want).  We want the archived messages saved on the storage of the new server, not the old server.

Hi Stormonts,

Is there a Storage Service configured on the new server under Enterprise Vault Servers > Services in the Console?

Regards,

Patrick
