With the SMTP journal feature in 11.0.1 how are DLs handled? There's a brief mention to adding a DL as a target, but that seems crazy if you're managing 1,000s. Is there any guidance on DL expansion? Or is this no longer an option?

my understanding is that in EV 11.0.1, smtp archiving is for journaling purposes. in a future release, smtp archiving will be for individual mailboxes or DLs or whatever.

That's what I'm using it for, but then it mentions that it doesn't expand the DLs. So wouldn't that mean that the original message won't be complete since you don't know who was in that DL at any given time?

when journaling, isnt distribution group expansion handled by exchange?

DL expansion mentioned at least twice in Setting Up SMTP Archiving
"To ensure that Enterprise Vault finds the selected target addresses in distribution
lists, the distribution lists in journaled messages must be expanded by hub transport
servers before the messages are sent to Enterprise Vault SMTP servers"
"To ensure that all mail to or from a particular mailbox address is captured, it is
important that hub transport servers expand distribution lists in messages before
the messages are sent to Enterprise Vault SMTP servers"

In MAPI-based EV Journaling EV also expands DLs in Exchange journal messages, and compared the recipients to the recipients in the envelope journal report. It has some logic to determine which ones should be "undisclosed recipients" etc:

I think the question is: How does SMTP journaling of Exchange journal messages handle this compared to MAPI-based journaling?
