In-place upgrade of Windows Server 2008 std SP2 to R2 on EV server

Hello

We are running EV 9.0.4 (on two standalone servers) and want to upgrade to EV 10.0.4.

The OS is Windows Server 2008 std SP2 64bit.

Does anyone have experience with in-place upgrade of OS from non R2 to R2 on EV servers? Can it be done?

The servers are way oversized due to a heavy PST import 2 years ago and we have only 1000 users.
So another approach could be to move all archives to one server and re-install the other. We use DA to put mails on Legal Hold, so it would require some work in DA too.

Looking forward to hear comments.

Br,

Jens

According with Microsoft, you should be able to upgrade non-R2 to R2:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979563%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

In regards to Enterprise Vault, you need to upgrade DA first. Here is the upgrade path for EV, CA and DA:

Supported upgrade paths for Enterprise Vault (EV), Compliance Accelerator (CA), and Discovery Accelerator (DA).
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH53174

Most of the customers are able to upgrade Windows OS to R2 and then Enterprise Vault without any issues. Just make sure that you run the Deployment Scanner after upgrading the OS and before installing EV to make sure you have all the prerequisites installed properly.

EV 10.0 version is not supported on Win2k8 SP2, OS must be Win2k8 R2.

You can use Server migration wizard as per http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO42445 (Enterprise Vault Server Settings Migration wizard )

Hi,

From DA Point of view it is required to Upgrade DA first to Version 10 SP4 and then you can upgrade Enterprise Vault Server.

As per Compatibility Guide Lower Version of DA is not supported with EV higher version.

DA version always Greater or Equal to current EV version.

You can first upgrade DA server and then upgrade EV server. After completion of EV upgradation , install EV 10 SP4 binaries on DA server. It is require to have same version of EV binaries installedon DA server for DA & EV Communication.

As per above suggestion, you sequence of upgrade can be.

Bring 2 new server (+1 if DA is stalled separtely) with minimum specification (8 gb Ram, 2.8 GHZ process with 4 CPU. Refer page 26 of guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4405) and all prerequisite.

Install EV 10.0 SP4 Binaries (don't run configuration wizard) install DA 10.0 4. Move DA to new server as per TN http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH55065

Install EV 10.0 SP4 (don't run configuration wizard) on other 2 EV servers. Migrate EV servers from version 9.0 SP4 (Win2k8 SP2) old hardware to 10.0 sp4 (Win2k8 R2) new hardware by Tech note http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO42445. It's recommended to install DA on separte box but it can be on same server where EV is running.

You can also approach Symantec consultancy/Partners for best possible way to achive above requirement.

Hi,

What's the Operating System installed on DA Server ?

If it is Windows Server 2008 R2 then you can perform Inplace upgrade for DA.

I know :) that's why I want to upgrade OS before upgrading EV.

Hi Gabe,

That sounds good - especially if this has been successfully done before.

And I guess R2 should be able to run on my hardware since it's already running 64bit.

Thank you for your answer.

Btw do you guys know if it's possible to upgrade Outlook Add-in from 9.0.4 to 10.0.4?

I read that it wasn't possible for some versions of 9.0.n to 10 but it might be possible in future service packs to EV 10, but it's a dead end...

I just remembered that we also have a dedicated EV reporting server on Windows Server 2003, do you know if that needs R2 too? In this case it needs to be reinstalled on a different server.

If you are upgrading to EV 10.0.4, then you should install the EV reporting components from the same EV version. Thus, you should upgrade that server to R2 as well.
