Apologies for the daft question, but in my defense I'm normally working with Oracle databases on Unix.
I'm looking to upgrade from Enterprise Vault 8 to 9 and wanted to know if it was a requirement to backup all of my closed File Stores prior to the upgrade.
I wish to minimise any downtime experienced by the users and felt that if I could exclude any closed stores that would be a considerable time saving.

In my opinion the answer is 'it depends'.
If you have a good backup of the closed partitions already, and, you are comfortable with the restore options available to you if things go wrong... then no, you can just backup the open partitions.

Hello Ravi,
Upgrade won't cause any issues to your closed parition, But symantec recommends to backup all you closed and open partition prior upgrade.
If you have already taken a backup of closed parition, it may not be the latest then you still backup the old parition and then upgrade your server.
Also you can back-up closed parition without putting enterprise vault in backup mode incase you don't want EV to be in a backup mode for a long time as you might have schedule archiving which should not be interrupted,.

Hi Ravi,
I would suggest you to take a look at the upgrade guide for Enterprise Vault 9. Since you didn't specified which version you were upgrading to, here is the upgrade PDF for Enterprise Vault 9.0.5 (latest version in Enterprise Vault 9.0.x):
Symantec Enterprise Vault 9.0.5 - Release Notes
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6417
One of the steps in the Enterprise Vault server preparation is to backup all the Enterprise Vault data (Page 35). Since you are upgrading from one major version to another, I would suggest you to backup al the partitions, including the closed partitions as well. Better safe than sorry.
I hope this helps.
