Limitation to the size of MDC file

ABHIJIT_BANSODE

Hello Team,

We have a user whose Archive is huge in size and is enable to use Virtual Vault/VC.

The problem is his VV/VC disappears after few days and the issue is repeated past 6 -7 months.

Once we extracted PST of his archive and it was almost 18GB in size.

I want to know if there is any limitations of the .mdc file size?

Thank you in advance

There is no way to limit the MDC size, you can only limit how much data is held in the DB files.
The only thing you can do in terms of limiting the MDC is how much data the user can drag/drop in to Virtual Vault.

i.e. only allow them to drop in 100MB before they get an error and need to synchronize before adding more, this stops people dumping in huge amounts of items exploding the growth of the MDC

The MDC is typically around 8%-10% of the archive, so an 18GB archive would be 1.6GB, depending on the number of items and such...

But yeah, theres no way to limit the MDC, only DB files

You can configure this in the desktop policy.  I think by default it is either 2GB or 10% of the HD.

Also, to note.  Whilst the mdc file does not have any limitations in size, the bulk of the data in the vault cache is contained in the .db files (a modified PST format) and those are limited to ~500 MB.  For example, my archive is ~9.5GB, with an MDC of 365MB and 33 .db files plus other system files.

As stated above you can control the overall size of the vault cache, but not specifically the MDC file.  What specific problem do you believe you are having with the MDC file?  The disappearance of his VC/VV is probably some type of profile cleanup on the VDI, or a similar activity.

Thank you all for the inputs.

What parameter do we have to set to control the size of VV/VC?

So just to re-iterate. The MDC cannot be limited, if there are 100,000 items in your archive, you will get all 100,000 items downloaded as stubs (i.e. subject, sender, recipients, sent date, 250 chars of the body etc), typically very small stubs of the email.

The Vault Cache (DB Files) can be limited based on a maximum size or a percentage and older items will either be removed from the Vault Cache (not from the online archive) or not downloaded at all.

For Virtual Vault / MDC Size control you can do things like stop people from archiving items (dragging items from a PST or their mailbox in to Virtual Vault) or how many items they can drag drop before it stops allowing more items to be dragged and dropped until a sync has occurred

You can also have it trigger an archive upload if a certain amount is awaiting to be archived, that way you keep the MDC size small and get the items archived ASAP and decrease the chances of dataloss

Settings are found in the Desktop Policy, any time you change these the user would need to be synchronized and their vault cache reset, because the settings are written as Registry keys, and they override what the policy is set to.

VAULT CACHE:
Maximum store size
The maximum size, in megabytes, that an offline archive is allowed to occupy.

Percentage store size
Percentage of disk capacity to use for Vault Cache.
If neither 'Store size' nor 'Percentage store size' is specified a default value of 10% of disk capacity is used.

VIRTUAL VAULT:
Users can archive items
Controls whether users can archive items.

Max item size to archive
Controls the maximum size (in MB) of an item that can be moved or copied into Virtual Vault.
(0) No limit

Max total size of items to archive
Controls the maximum total size (in MB) of pending-archive data in Vault Cache.
(0) No limit

Threshold total size of items to trigger synchronization
Specifies the total size (in MB) of pending-archive items that triggers automatic Vault Cache synchronization.
(0) Disabled
