Migrating mailboxes (Exchange 2003 > 2010) With stubbed emails

Hi guys,

We have Enterprise Vault v10 (10.0.2.xxxx) in our Exchange 2003 environment which stubs any emails in mailboxes that are older than 30 days.

The stubbed data is stored on our Enterprise Vault server.

We are planning to migrate from Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2010 SP2.

The questions I have are:

1. When a mailbox has been migrated over to Exchange 2010, will the stubbed emails still accessible/able to be populated?

2. Do we need to make any changes/upgrade our Enterprise Vault server as we're migrating to Exchange 2010? Anything to bare in mind regarding 32-bit to 64-bit email platform?

3. Will we need to make any changes to the Add-in on the Outlook clients? We have Outlook 2007 on our workstations.

4. Also we have Symantec's E-Discovery product which we will be using. Will this tool be able to journal/search run queries against emails that have been stubbed and migrated to Exchange 2010?

Thank in Advance

Ron

Yes Discovery Accelerator is an additional product, as well as Clearwell, and each are designed to the legal search and hold, with Clearwell being more robust.

You should consult your Symantec partner or sales rep to see which products fits your needs.

Hi Ron,

Answers inline..

1. When a mailbox has been migrated over to Exchange 2010, will the stubbed emails still accessible/able to be populated?

- Use SyncInMigrationMode registry setting before migrating users from Exchange 2003 to 2010.
- Yes the stubbed emails are still accessible, you will need to add Exchange 2010 in targets on EV.

2. Do we need to make any changes/upgrade our Enterprise Vault server as we're migrating to Exchange 2010? Anything to bare in mind regarding 32-bit to 64-bit email platform?

- Outlook version on EV Server needs to be Outlook 2007 SP3 to support Exchange 2010 (SP1)
- Vault Service account needs a mailbox on Exchange 2010 Mbx Server.
- Refer Setting up exchange guide for more information about pre-requisites.

3. Will we need to make any changes to the Add-in on the Outlook clients? We have Outlook 2007 on our workstations.

- If you are not changing Outlook client versio for users then there is no change required for add-ins.

4. Also we have Symantec's E-Discovery product which we will be using. Will this tool be able to journal/search run queries against emails that have been stubbed and migrated to Exchange 2010?

- Yes, it searches in Index Volumes of archive and archived items are indexed [not the stub's (shortcut)]

Hi, Thanks for your prompt response.

So to clarify:

1. We will be archiving/stubbing both environments (Exchange 2003 and Exhcange 2010) at the same time during co-existence. Assuming we can only use ONE Vault service account (?), will we have to mgirate this first? or can we create a new one for the Exchange 2010 mailbox servers?

2. In regards to the Symantec E-Discovery product, to clarify - will the emails that are stubbed be in the Volumes of archive/indexed, hence they will be searchable? So am I right in saying that they will search the Enterprise Vault server and not the Exchange mailboxes (because the Exchange mailboxes will only contain the shortcuts...) Yes?

Thanks

Ron

Hi Ron,

The Vault Service Account should be the same. As indicated before, you need to get the VSA a mailbox on Exchange 2010, and execute the powershell scripts in regards to throttling and permissioning. As you target the 2003 and the 2010 exchange servers using the same Enterprise Vault site, you will need to use only 1 VSA.

Discovery Accelerator is used to search archives indexes. It will not do Journal Archiving. You will have to configure Journaling in Exchange, and Journal Archiving in Enterprise Vault. You can then configure DA to be used as search tool. In theory, you only use the Journal Archive(s) as target for DA. If necessary, you can include users archives, but the Journal Archive should give you the relevant info.

succes!

Thanks GertJan,

Sorry for my ignorance, having little knowledge about Symantec - Is Discovery Accelerator a seperate product to Symantec eDiscovery (Clearwell?) ..?

Ideally we need to journal data for legal hold and compliance reasons.

Thanks

Ron
