Move Archive feature

Hi all,

We are setup two Vault store for our Email archive when we start using EV, one is for Journal and one is for user mailbox

As we found that the storage size of our EV was growth too fast, now we want to merge the Journal Vault Store and User mailbox Store into one.

We had read the EV document and we want to use the move archived feature (Move from User to Journal) to achieve our goal.  But we still not clear in some ares, hope someone can give us a hand before we take any action.

There should have some duplicate email in Journal and User mailbox store, if we merge these two store, did it remove the depulicate email or just copy all the email to the another store?  If it will remove the depulicate email, did this also apply to the closed partition?

Thank you very much

Regards

Hello PoorGuy,

As far as I know, the move archive feature will 'extract/ingest' the items. this means they are (like you state) reindexed, and also newly SIS'd.

"There should have some duplicate email in Journal and User mailbox store, if we merge these two store, did it remove the depulicate email or just copy all the email to the another store?  If it will remove the depulicate email, did this also apply to the closed partition?"

When an archive is moved, the source archive is closed, and the new archive is opened. archiving new items will write directly to the new archive. Items are being copied from old to new archive. Items will be verified when all are copied (takes about half the time the move takes). when ok, shortcuts in user mailboxes are updated. When that all is done succesfully (which you can see in the Move Archive status window), you can delete the move archive task. At that time you get the option to also delete the source archive. You need to do that, otherwise you need to do it manually afterwards. Be advised that if you have many (large) archives, the deletion can take a while. You probably will not see a diskspace gain quick, but eventually you will.

archived items which are in closed partitions will (obviously) also be processed, but again, if many archives, it takes time.

IMHO, it is more simple to add storage (if that is possible).

Hi Gertjan, Thank you so much for your explanation. It is very clear and useful for me. So sad to say that we cannot add storage in this moment that‘s why we need to figure out another option. :(

Hi,

Keep in mind that using the move archive will initially require more storage.

Because at a certain point in time you have double archives. one new one old. only when the old one is deleted, you might get some space back. (look at https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-collections-and-sparse-collections-work and http://www.veritas.com/docs/000041898

Good luck.

I must disagree with Gertjan slightly and strongly state that you will acheive no storage benefit from combining the vault stores over what you get with single instancing across vault stores.  All you will be doing it using more storage to get the archives moved, potential for lost or corrupted data unnecessarily and a lot of administrative overhead.  Ultimately you'll end up with the same storage requirements but only on one location.  No storage savings at all.

One thing to look at...  what is your sector size on your storage platform?  If you are using anything over 4K then you are probably wasting a ton of space since EV stores millions of small files.  If this is the case you need to use collections to gather the small files into 10MB cab files and thus reclaim a lot of the unused space in the larger (probably 64K) sectors.
