Offline Vault - Double Entries in Archive Explorer when Offline

We're running the EV 6, SP1 since about 3 months. We still test the system since many adjustments had to be done to get things work that way we wanted them to work, e.g. OWA, Archiving, etc. To change the state from test to productive we still need Offline Vault to work properly.

There are several issues to be solved but one of the main problems which everybody of our Test team experiences is

as soon as an Outlook Client is not connected to the Exchange Server (2000) Archive Explorer will show multiple entries for every archived Mail depending on how often Offline Vault was updated (either automatically or manually by pressing the button in Outlook). When Outlook is connected/online everything works fine. The *.xml files, which represent the folder contents also contain these multiple entries. The Error Logs don't show anything eyecatching, and also KVS support is trying to find a solution since about 6 weeks.

Our team is slowly beginning to become insane....but we need the Offline Vault since this feature was one of the fundamental arguments for EV.

Did anybody else experience a problem like this with Offline Vault?? Or maybe any ideas?

Thanx
Christoph

Hi Christoph

Essentially we would need to see the structure and content of the xml files created under the following dir:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\KVS\Enterprise Vault\4b1698d6c4b2a84087ef7d0f3bf3a7cc (or similar GUID)

(not the .db files)

We would also need to see a dump of the HKCU\software\kvs regkey. Specifically we will be looking for sequence numbers on the downloaded items.

If support have not yet asked you for these information then I suggest you send it to them for analysis.

However one key thing that you should note is that if per-chance the duplicated items you are seeing are as a result of items being deleted and recreated and then re-archived you may well end up with this type of scenario.

Also a bit more information will be useful:
1. What Outlook client are you using.
2. Have you ever upgraded the EV client from V5 or V4
3. Have you tried to delete the 4b1698d6c4b2a84087ef7d0f3bf3a7cc (or similar GUID) and then reset the OV to initiate a rebuild?
3.1 - If you have does it build without duplicates or do start to get new duplicates after the rebuild for new items or all items.
4. Have you modified any of the registry values on the client?

Cheers

Hi Ghost,

thank you for your fast response.

I am in contact with the symantec support team. I have also sent them the xml files. Though the idea with the registry key is good since I haven't done this yet.

no, I haven't deleted or restored any items out of the archive, they are all original items, which have been archived and not touched anymore.

Outlook 2003 SP2 German Edition

>2. Have you ever upgraded the EV client from V5 or V4
No, the complete EV installation is based on 6.0 SP1

>3. Have you tried to delete the 4b1698d6c4b2a84087ef7d0f3bf3a7cc (or similar >GUID) and then reset the OV to initiate a rebuild?
yes, several times

>3.1 - If you have does it build without duplicates or do start to get new duplicates >after the rebuild for new items or all items.
it starts without duplicates, so everything seems fine in the beginning, but next day after the update process Archive Explorer in Offline Mode will show more than single objects.

>4. Have you modified any of the registry values on the client?
No values have been modified in the registry. All changes were made via the EV admin console.

btw, today we observed a new behaviour on more than one mailbox (with OV): First day....everything seemed alright (no dupes)
Second day.....at least duplicated items, sometimes also multiple items
Third day (today)...only folder structure is displayed in Archive Explorer but no contents at all. This may result from invalid *.xml files which Offline Vault created today. The error is: "xdr has not been mapped to any URI" and he adds into the new duplicated elements the string "xdr:dt="dateTime". The strange thing is, he does this first on the third day (on all mailboxes).

thank you
Christoph

Hi Christophe

When you get this xdr error, where are you seeing it or what are you doing when you get it.

The formatting of the xdr entry in the xml file is correct as far as I can tell for Sp1.

Hi Ghost,

I only see it because:

Archive Explorer won't show any entries anymore
and
the *.xml files can't be opened (e.g. with IE6 or another XML Tool). There would always be some error message like "The prefix "xdr" has not been mapped to any URI".

But Outlook won't complain or show any error message.

There is also no real other workaround than find and replace the string "xdr:dt="dateTime" with " ". Then Archive Explorer again shows the content.

Strange is just that in the initial state, i.e. before Archive Explorer hides the content, all date entries are without this string and it works. Maybe some language conflict since we have German clients?

Thank you
Christoph
