Hi,

I am not sure that i well understanding the deletion mechanism from Archives.

I know that archived items can be deleted periodically (scheduled) after shortcuts are deleted from Exchange.

Q1: Is it considering item expiry or once user delete shortcut, at the next scheduled clean-up it will be deleted?

Q2: If item is locating within CAB or closed partition, does the item(s) will be deleted?

Hi Asterisk There are multiple options: - You can allow deletions from Vault by Users, you can have "Soft Deletes", where only the Shortcut gets deleted, or "Hard deletes", where the archived item is deleted, too. (Mailbox Policy -> Advanced -> Outlook -> "Shortcut deletion behaviour" - You can have "Storage expiry", which automatically deletes items from Vaults based on Retention Category - You can have "Shortcut deletion", which only deletes the shortcuts in the Users mailbox, but not in the archive - Items in closed partitions are deleted, Items in CAB's are not physically deleted immediately, there is some re-cabbing going on behind the scenes which does it periodically/based on CAB size, I think Hope this helps... Hi Michel,

Thanks for the comprehensive answer.

I think that I knew almost everything but still not sure that I have the answer:

Is it possible to define that user can delete the shortcuts and in case of " Orphand" items within the Vault, by schedule it can be deleted automatically after 2 weeks?

Consider that the retention category set to 3 years.

Is there any conflict of the storage expiry and the deletion from Archive (manual/"orphand")?

Thanks

With "Orphaned" Items, you mean Items that are IN the vault, but the Shortcut has been deleted by the User with "Soft delete"? Something like "delayed deletion" in Vault? This is unfortunately not possible. There is no conflict with storage expiry and deletion from Archive. Deletion will happen immediately, so the item will not be "seen" by storage expiry anymore. Cheers Michel

Hello!

That is the difference between the Advanced Outlook Policy settings 'Shortcut deletion behavior' and 'Soft deletes'? If shortcut deletion behavior is set to 'shortcut only' while soft deletes is set to 'Off', what is the effective deletion behavior?

Thanks!

HARD deletes (Shift+Delete)
Soft deletes are actually an item move (To the Deleted Items Folder).

Thanks for responding, Paul.

I'm clear on what Hard/Soft deletes are from an Outlook perspective. I'm looking for clarification on what the 2 options on the Advanced Tab ('Shortcut deletion behavior' and 'Soft deletes') mean from an Enterprise Vault perspective. Initially, they seemed redundant to me. So I'm looking for a better understanding of the differences between those 2 options.

Soft delete = "On". Does this mean that selecting an email shortcut of an archived message and hitting Delete moves the shortcut to the Deleted Items folder???

Soft delete = "Off". Does this mean that selecting an email shortcut of an archived message and hitting Delete is the equivalent of hitting Shift+Delete???
