Public folder archiving, does a users individual mailbox need to archived to allow them access archived mail in public folders.

Folks,

We have a very large public folder that is accessed by over 2000 people. Of these 2000 people, approximately 600 have had their personal mailboxes enabled for archiving. So they have access to the EV extensions in their Outlook client. Can the remaining 1400 users still access archived items in the the public folders? The client extensions are resident on all users machines, and are activated once a user has been enabled for archiving. So if a user whose personal mailbox is not enabled for archiving accesses an archived email what happens? Do the extensions get installed automatically? If not, can we get this behaviour changed?

Hi,

Thanks for that. But can they use the EV extensions to archive/restore items from the public folder? Search.asp and archiveexplorer are rarely used by employees. The EV buttons in Outlook are the items used in the vast majority of cases? Is there any way of triggering the buttons to appear if a user is not enabled for archiving but double clicks on an archived email in a public folder? Running EV7.5 SP4/

A user's mailbox would have to be enabled in order to see the buttons in the Outlook client.  You have to be able to apply desktop policies in order to get those buttons, and they only appear according to that policy when the user's mailbox gets the hidden message that says they're enabled with said buttons.

Unfortunately, you can't get a public folder to behave the same way because no one person 'owns' a public folder like they do a maibox.

A user not enabled for archiving can still access the public folder archive, aslong as they have permissions to the archive.  Which is simple to apply right click archive > permissions tab.

Users can the open items from search.asp or archiveexplorerui.asp.
