Purpose of Restore function in Outlook

I have some test users who are asking what the purpose of the "Restore" function is, more specifically why you would need to do a restore of an archived item. I know what it does but I'll not sure why it's needed. Also if the item is restored does that remove it from the archive ?

For the record, opening the archived item and clicking forward works. You don't have to manually restore first.
In EV prior to v8, you need to restore an item in order to archive it with a different retention category.
Restoring an item does not delete it from the archive.

@AndrewB, yes I know that......

You need to open it, if u user wants to click "forward" on the shortcut it will forward the shortcut.  Its not easy to train end users that they need to open it first if that's what they used to.

Thanks, thats a good training point about having to open it first because I had noticed that you could forward without doing a restore, but I always open the message first.

When you click forward on a shortcut from a folder it will open the archived item - just like a normal email does - and then you can forward to your hearts content.

Earlier versions of EV would only forward the shortcut itself.

Other reasons why you would need to restore... if you want to move the email to a PST, if you want to move the item to a shared mailbox (so you don't need to give anyone access to your archive).  Because you to access your archived emails whilst offline the company won't give you Offline Vault/Vault Cache :)

If an item is archived, and they wish to forward it to someone outside. (pre v2007)
If you wish to attach a mail in a email.
If you wish to move an item, to pst for example.

That's three reasons of the top of my head why.
