RPC over HTTP

Hi All,

When opening archived emails using RPC over HTTP, the emails are not completely recalled and the following error message is displayed:
"There was an error loading this item -- some functionality not not be available"

If you manually restore the email using the eVault restore button within Ourlook the emails are recalled without any issues. We are running EV 7.5 SP3 on Exchange 2003, does anyone know if any additional settings are required for RPC of HTTP?

Hi Guys,

We upgraded to version EV 8 over the weekend and still had the same issue. After digging through the configuration guide I noticed that the evservers.txt file (C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\OWA) was blank. This file needs to exist on both your front-end and back-end Exchange Servers and should contain your EV Server name.

If this file is blank your front-end Server doesn’t know where to redirect the archive recall request.

The following steps resolved the issue:

1. Run MakeEVServersTxt.wsf (C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\OWA 2003 Extensions) which generates a new evservers.txt.
2. Copy this directory to both the Front-End and Back-End Servers
3. Run the MSI - Symantec Enterprise Vault OWA 2003 Extensions.msi choosing the repair option.
4. Synchronize mailboxes via the Mailbox task.

Can you post your client log file from when you try to open an archived email, and encounter the problem?  (Ensure you enable maximum logging and restart Outlook first)

Is this a very restricted / limited client?
(i.e. secured kiosk or something similar?)


Additionally, are you able to open the elements in non-RPC over HTTP mode?

Having a search through the internal knowledge base the WriteAndOpenFile: 0x80070003 issue has only been logged once and this was down to not being able to write to the ev temp folder.

1. I have tried to access the URL provided without any luck.. Looking at the contents of the Virtual directory (EnterpriseVaultProxy) on our Front-End OWA Server directory, download.asp doesn’t exist. Should this file be present???
2. I have tested clean skin versions of Vista and XP to rule out any issues with our desktop build.
3. When a user is working on the LAN everything works without any issues.

Are you referring to a temp folder (Page 308 – Administrators Guide ) on the workstation, frontend Exchange, backend Exchange or the Evault Server?

Have you installed the Enterprise Vault OWA Extensions on the Exchange Server?

Dear Matt,

Few things to check :

1) Verify policy, ion Advance tab - Outlook - verify RPC over HTTP is used or Direct.
2) If RPC over HTTP is enabled thne configure Outlook in same way, accout settings - change - connection type- enable RPC over HTTP and enter the address.

3) Also verify if  any proxy is enabled on client machine, if yes then bypass proxy for the evserver and verify the EV site name is present in trusted sites of IE.

4) ping the evsite name and the alias both direct to your physical evserver.

Verify all, it has to be work

Hi Guys,

We upgraded to version EV 8 over the weekend and still had the same issue. After digging through the configuration guide I noticed that the evservers.txt file (C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\OWA) was blank. This file needs to exist on both your front-end and back-end Exchange Servers and should contain your EV Server name.

If this file is blank your front-end Server doesn’t know where to redirect the archive recall request.

The following steps resolved the issue:

1. Run MakeEVServersTxt.wsf (C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault\OWA 2003 Extensions) which generates a new evservers.txt.
2. Copy this directory to both the Front-End and Back-End Servers
3. Run the MSI - Symantec Enterprise Vault OWA 2003 Extensions.msi choosing the repair option.
4. Synchronize mailboxes via the Mailbox task.
