Recent windows or office updates breaking EV search button functionality in Outlook (October 12)

It seems that some Outlook or Windows updates broke the Search Button functionality in Outlook. We already do have 3 confirmation from different affected systems. Verified with EV 10.0.3/4, EV 11.0.1 CHF5 as well as 12.2.1.

Pressing the buttons does nothing. All are showing the following error (or a slightly different) when trying to open search in Outlook:

12/10/2017 13:41:16.930[7068][M]: Launching EV web application in Outlook: http://evserver/EnterpriseVault/search/shell.aspx?server=Exchange&mbx=SMTP:T.Test@Test.local&vaultid=VID&NAV=0
....
12/10/2017 13:41:17.052[7068][L]: ~LaunchURLUsingHiddenFolder::GoToURL: 0xBBC04005
....
12/10/2017 13:41:17.054[7068][H]: Action: Failed to execute action 'SEARCH'
12/10/2017 13:41:17.055[7068][H]: Action: A COM error exception has been caught: bbc04005

Opening Search in IE is working fine. We are currently trying to bring this down to a specific update. Appreciate any feedback on this. Will update when we do have new findings.

Edit 1:

It seems that the updates broke the homepage on folders feature which EV uses to open the search. Every affected system is missing the homepage button when opening folder details in Outlook.

Edit 2:

Thanks to a customer we now have the information that the problematic update seems to be KB4011196. For now we do only have confirmation for Outlook 2010.

Regards

Marc

Hi,

i´ve opened a case for this a minute ago (22368172). The update which breaks the functionality is MS KB 4011196 for Outlook 2010.

Hi,

For 2013 the update is KB4011178 and shows the same behavior.  Outlook 2016 is KB4011162. Support is currently working to determine the issue and the only current workarounds are to use IE to open Search or remove the KB from the client machine.

Will update when more information is available.

Patrick

Another Issue that exists when KB401196 or it´s previous patches:

Searching for items in the Virtual Vault from Outlook Search in Outlook 2010 didn´t deliver valid results while Windows search find´s all items in the cache.

Hi,

there is a workaround for this microsoft patches to fix the search button:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Fixes-or-workarounds-for-recent-issues-in-Outlook-for-Windo...

The workaround #2 for issue#1 works fine for me, but the search in VV is still broken. Als after installing the outlook addin 12.2.1.

Hello all,

what is your best solution for terminal server 2008?

Any better ideas than using registry via GPO like this:

Configure a Registry Item in Group Policy Management Console

Thanks and have a nice weekend
