Retention Category Hold will not allow deletes from new retention category

Getting the following error when trying to change the original retention category -
=EV8.01

Yep this is correct you cannot change items that are on Legal Hold.

I removed the legal hold but now I cannot delete anything when running a script to apply a custom retention category. 
If you remove the legal hold shouldn't it work?

If an item has not got a legal hold and it is eligible for expiry then it should be deleted yes. Bit confused when you say you cannot delete anything when running a script to apply a customer ret cat. Can you expand on what you mean by this and what you are trying to achieve. Also what version of EV are you running?
