System upgrade from MS 2008 to 2012 r2

Hello.

We are going to in-place upgrade Evault servers from MS 2008 r2 to 2012 r2. Could you please clarify if setting backup mode and stopping EV admin service before system upgrade and starting back after upgrade will be enough or it's necessary to perform actions as per manual https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH55377 ? We use Evault 10.0.4 version. Anyway I want to launch Evault migration tool on each server and save all settings before upgrading. In case of any issues after upgrading I will configure Evault using migration tool data. Will it work as I expect?Thanks in advance!

technically you cant in-place upgrade the OS. you'll have to reinstall EV and reconfigure it afterwards.

ideally, you would build new 2012 servers and perform the server migration (per the article), test everything, then decom your old 2008 servers.

Hmm, today we performed SQL servers upgrade by this way and it works properly for now. What do you mean "technically you cant in-place upgrade the OS" ? Technet says that it works https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx and http://blogs.technet.com/b/chrisavis/archive/2013/10/01/performing-an-in-place-upgrade-of-server-2008-r2-to-server-2012-r2.aspx for example or you mean that Evault will not work properly after such system upgrading?

to clarify, i meant that i wouldnt expect EV to work properly after such an upgrade so you should plan on having to reinstall and reconfigure it. i wouldnt consider it best practice for EV and you probably want to test this in a lab before risking your production system. the approach i suggested is what we would do for customers.

Anyway, we performed in-place upgrade for all servers from 2008 to 2012, set Backup mode and stopped EV services before migration. The main problem we are faces- installing of .NET 4.5.2 to all servers after upgrade, because EV indexing service started and crashed immediately. An issue was highlighted to Symantec support and fixed by Microsoft support engineer in a few hours. Checked functionality and everything works properly.

Hello Vladimir,

Can you clarify the issue which was fixed by Symantec support and the MS engineer?

Is it now possible to update the os in-place?

I cannot buy a new server only for an update. This makes no sense for me.

According to this article : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn303416.aspx

You can inplace upgrade from W2008R2 to W2012R2

For instance:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 => Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with SP1 => Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

As noted above, you will need to stop EV, after upgrade, first run deployment scanner to see if you have met all pre-reqs.

Haven't found document saying yes, but also not found any saying no.

As said, and noted by Vladimir, there might be issues with OS related items (like IIS, .Net etc).
