The Web Application is not configured correctly in the Vault Site settings.

Since installing EVS 8.0sp1 on a new server I am getting this error on my Outlook 2003 when clicking Vault Search:

"The Web Application is not configured correctly in the Vault Site settings.
Please contact your Enterprise Vault Administrator."

When I click on Archive Explorer the left-hand pane in Outlook just toggles on or off - it does not load the archive explorer window.

The Store in Archive and Restore from Archive buttons work properly. Double-clicking a sortcut correctly opens the archived item.

The only relevant thing I can see on the Vault Site properties is the Vault site alias and port. I have tested http://alias/enterprisevault/ and http://alias/enterprisevault/ArchiveExplorerUI.asp from the workstation and they both work.

I have tried the only suggestion I could find in this forum - which was to delete the profile and reinstall the Outlook client - but that hasn't helped.

Any other ideas anyone?

TIA,
Carol

I have fixed it by creating a mailbox for the EVS service account. Note I am not talking about the system mailbox - that existed and I'd done all the mail profile setup on the EVS server - but I found I also had to create a mailbox for the service account.

I find this very weird as I am using the same service account as was used in the PoC, and it didn't have a mailbox then.

I was troubleshooting why welcome emails were not being sent. Trying to send an email from the EVS server (logged in as the service account, using the system mailbox) gave me a permissions error. The only way I could grant the service account the Send As right to the system mailbox was by creating a mailbox for it as well. Once I did that, welcome messages started to work.

And at the same time my Outlook client is now receiving the desktop policy! Search Vaults and Archive Explorer are working.

So - what's going on? Nothing I have read in the doco says that the service account needs a mailbox. And it didn't for the PoC installation. So why does it now?

And yes the service account is an Exchange Administrator and it does have all mailbox permissions to the system mailbox.

I have noticed a difference between the new server (a fresh install of EV8.0sp1) and the test server (7.x upgraded to 8.0):

On the test server tha Vault site alias is "alias.domain.ch" (when looking at Vault Site properties)
On the new server it's just "alias" - ie no domain suffix.

I assumed I'd done something wrong, however I had screen-shotted the entire installation and I can only find one page in the Configuration Wizard where it asks for the alias. I answered as follows:

Computer name: alias
Add domain suffix: ticked
Domain suffix: domain.ch

I have looked in the ComputerEntry table and the ComputerName is alias.domain.ch.

Where is it getting this alias from that it disaplys in the Site properties?

And could this be the reason that the Outlook client is not working properly?

What about:

http://alias.domain.ch/enterprisevault/

Does this work, too?

Cheers from and to Switzerland ;)

Just as a test can you please do the following:-

Goto your mailbox policy
Advanced Tab
Enter the outlook section
If Launch Archive Explorer is set to seperate browser then change this to In outlook
Sync the changes to the user
Test and now does AE work fine that it is opened within outlook

Regarding the site alias this is not relevant as this is just the name given to the site at install time and you have just added the domain suffix in EV8 which you did not do in your test system

Yes that URL does work.

OK found what you're talking about in the Desktop policy section. I had not modified this at all from the default settings. I have now set it all the same as the policy from the test server.

However it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I ran an archive job (this should force a sync?) but nothing changed, so I reinstalled the client - and it's still exactly the same as before.

The changes I made:

Add server to intranet zone: Blank -> http://alias; http://alias.domain.ch
Allow script in public folders: Force on -> Keep user's settings
Allow script in shared folders: Force on -> Keep user's settings
Fix Outlook preview pane: Apply automatically -> Do not apply
Launch Archive Explorer: In Outlook -> Seperate browser
Search behaviour: In Outlook -> Seperate browser

I am becoming pretty convinced that the desktop policy is not being applied at all. I have tried some modifications like removing the toolbar icons, but they are still there. I tried various ways to sync it, including reinstalling the outlook client.

Actually (leter edit) I just found the reg key LaunchAEInBrowser and I set it, and now I can open Archive Explorer. So I think it's pretty clear the Desktop Policy is not being applied. What could be blocking it?

Here it is the level 1 log file in case it is of interest.

Can you check the SIteEntry table for webappurl - what is it currently set for?

Do you mean the field DefaultWebAppURL? It is

/EnterpriseVault

It was the same for the test installation (which was working).
