As we recentely came across I thought noting this down in case someone is stumbling across it as well. We were facing the following error message when opening inline attachments of archived items.
"The program used to create this object is Outlook. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Outlook or ensure that any dialog boxes in Outlook are closed".
The German version:
„Das zum Erstellen dieses Objekts verwendete Programm ist Outlook. Das Programm ist entweder auf dem Computer nicht installiert, oder es reagiert nicht. Installieren Sie zum Bearbeiten des Objekts Outlook, oder stellen Sie sicher, dass alle Dialogfelder in Outlook geschlossen sind.“
This seems to be independent from EV - unarchived items with inline attachments showing the same behavior and it's caused by the Microsoft Office june 2017 security updates:
