Virtualize Enterprise Vault server

hasayeretFMG
Level 3

Hi guys,

I just joined this new company as the IT Manager and they're using Enterprise Vault 10.0.4.1189
This is the first time I'm dealing with Enterprise Vault and the first thing i'd like to do is to virtualize (VMWare, not HyperV) the server since it's physical server (Server2008r2 Datacenter which i'd like to virtualize to 20012r2 Datacenter).
Anything in particular i need to know about? any recommendations? any "do's" and/or "dont do's"?
Once (and if) virtualized, is there anything that needs to be done in the Exchange level? (we're using Exchange 2010) What about in the user level?

Thanks!!!

Hi

Datacenter version of Windows? You don't really need that..

Virtualizing is no issue. You can go VM since EV8 already. If you still pay for support/maintenance, you should really upgrade to EV11, then 12. 10 is out of support.

Besides P_to_V the EV server, no additional config/change needs to be done.

Thanks so much!
The KBs you've attached are more related to a server migration so if i am simply P2V instead of migrating to a new server i shouldn't use these docs, simply run P2V, is that correct? did i get you right?

Hello,

Yes. If you do a P2V, including all attached local disks (which might hold EV info also, depending on your setup) you should be fine. As long as the servername and the alias used remain intact, you should be fine. I've been at a company where we P2V'ed 32 server without issues.

Thanks!
Do we have the keep the same IP address for the new virtual server or are we good with a different one?

Hello,

EV uses the computername to do 'stuff'. If correct designed, you will have DNS aliasses for your EVsite and server(s). If so, those aliasses need to be update ofcourse, but you should not have issues.

I'll give it a try. Thanks so much!

By the way - Am I safe to change the server name before/after the conversion without hurting the users?
The current server name does not reflect that it's a virtual server so the name is currently companyname-EV.
I'd like to change the name to companyname-vm-EV

Can i change it on the physical server prior to the P2V without a problem?

Changing the servername itself should work without issues, but might give problems.

See http://www.veritas.com/docs/000032002

If you use aliasses, make sure to update them to point to the new name.

Thank you! What if i don't use aliasses? Looking at my DNS i only have th A record for my server there but no aliass. Thoughts?

Couple more questions to you sir:

1. The server is running SQL server and anywhere i'm reading I see that P2V and SQL doesn't go well together. Anything in particular i should do with the DBs and SQL Windows services before i'm starting the P2V process?

2. Anything I need to do with the EV services before starting the P2V process?

3. Do i run the P2V convertor softwre from the source machine or from a 3rd party machine?

Thanks so much!!!

You can give the server a new name (A record) but you'll need to create a CName with the old server name.  The servername or preferably alias  is extensively used and cannot be removed or renamed.
