Why do I need to specify a Global Catalog Server?

This past weekend a GC in our datacenter was moved from a physical server to a virtual one. After the move the EV archive task would not start due to startup errors. When I entered a GC in the target\domain settings the task started and all was well. I've been running EVv since 2006 and have never had to specify a GC. Could it have gotten hard coded somewhere in the registry?

I am running EV 8.0.2 on a W2K3 SP2 server and Exchange 2007 SP1.

Thank you

You don't need to specify a GC as long as long as the correct routing for your IP subnet is linked in Active Directory Sites and Services

If you don't have this set correctly and the new DC is in a different site OU then you may run into issues because the server has issues auto finding the nearest GC. As good practice you should have a GC in the same site as your Exchange servers as well as EV...just makes life easier
