journal archive is failing

hi- thanks for the time and effort.

i've going around in circles on this one. I have called Symantec EV support but so far they cant figure it out.  Our archiving on the journaling mailbox has stopped. 

scenario:

-exchange 2007 mailbox server

-separate exchange public folder server

the journal mailbox and EV system mailbox are both on the public folder server. Symantec has said it doesnt matter where the mailboxes are... and at one time this did work but now has stopped.

the journal mailbox has climbed up to 500k emails.  and growing.  i have recreated the tasks...that didnt help. the private queue is empty...but now says 1 but when you open it there is nothing there to purge.

also we are told that we cannot upgrade to 9.03 unless this is fixed.

any thoughts or ideas?  thanks again for your time.

How new is the journal mailbox?  The first time EV passes through a new mailbox the view EV requests on the data will not exist in the Exchange database, for folders with a large number of items (typically the inbox of a journal mailbox) this can take some time.

Once this has completed EV then has to mark each item as we attempt to re-group bifurcated journal reports.  Nothing can be archived until this process has been completed.

One option in the short term is to create a new journal mailbox and repoint your databases/journal rules to this mailbox.  Create a new journal task for this mailbox which should hopefully keep up.

The old task/journal mailbox should eventually (but probably slowly) catchup.

It's difficult without seeing a DTrace to be honest But I think I would go for the nuclear option Stop and delete the journal task Remove the journal target from the VAC Delete the journals entry from the ExchangeMailboxEntry table Create a brand new system mailbox Add the journal target that will create a new task again that will point to the new system mailbox Also make sure that the journal mailbox isn't hidden and that you can log on to the mailbox on the EV server logged in as the evadmin account. When logging in make sure it doesn't ask you for credentials

You may want to re-install MSMQ also if you have bogus entries. Any idea what may have caused the archiving to stop - Any changes to Exchange or EV?

What version are you currently on?  I would recommend what JW2 said, post a dtrace if the nuclear option doesn't work.

Also, are there any errors in the EV app log?

we have version 8.0sp3.  

jw2- we did everything but delete the ExchangeMailboxEntry...im guessing thats on the sql backend?

karl - the new system mailbox was created last night... i havent tried a new journal mailbox yet... how will that affect the old mailbox?

The dtrace extract shows the items correctly being placed into part pending. Have you got the complete Dtrace?

so you have stuff there since january?
I think karls idea of creating a new journal mailbox and targeting that would be the best idea to get new items archiving.

The thing with a mailbox of that size is EV Scanning all of those messages then having to wait the 5 minutes to change it from a pendingPart to a pending  will just create a bigger and bigger backlog

i thank you all... looks like recreating the systemailbox and removing the journal tasks and the journal target from VAC. and then adding the journal target that created the new task.... as stated by JW2.  what got it going was patience...as Karl stated "Once this has completed EV then has to mark each item as we attempt to re-group bifurcated journal reports.  Nothing can be archived until this process has been completed.

there are about 3 messages in the journal private queue...its fluctuating. I saw it as high as 20.  so im guessing this will take about a day or more to catch up.   

I apologize for the spam of the dtrace file.  should i still post it now that it is working?  i would really like to get down to the root cause.  

and is there some type of monitoring i can setup so that when if it gets stuck again I can be warned?

nevermind.. the inbox is going back up again.  If I create a new journal mailbox how can i get the messages from the current journal mailbox.  and does the new journal mailbox have to reside on the Exchange server where the users reside?
