rightfax plugin prevents vaulted emails from loading properly

jroe
Level 4

when opening a vaulted email with the rightfax plugin enabled (which isnt really in use since its not a new email to send a fax for):

"there was an error loading this item -- some functionality may not be available"

then: "the handle is invalid. 80070006"

disabling the rightfax plugin restores normal functionality of vaulted emails. the plugin is necessary for enterprise faxing.

is there a way to supress the vault from interacting or loading plugins on vaulted email messages?

rightfax plugin:

file:///c:\program files (x86)\rightfax\/client/outlookaddin/outlook2010addin.visto|vistolocal

appears to occur with outlook 2010 only

Not seeing a full/verbose log you can try the following regkey on one of your systems and see if that helps after adding in the rightfax dll, other than that it will probably be necessary to raise a case so we can see if we can the two to play nicely together (I would suggest you go to the latest client release regardless though):

VVStubOnlyModuleList

Location

In Enterprise Vault 9.0 and later, you can set this registry value in three possible locations.

See Location of Vault Cache and Virtual Vault registry values.

In Enterprise Vault versions before Enterprise Vault 9.0, the registry value has the following possible locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
 \SOFTWARE
  \KVS
   \Enterprise Vault
    \Client
     \VaultCacheStoreID
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
 \SOFTWARE
  \KVS
   \Enterprise Vault
    \Client

Content

A string value containing a semicolon-separated list of DLL file names.

The default value is "googledesktopoffice.dll;mssphtb.dll".

The file googledesktopoffice.dll is the Google Desktop Search Outlook Add-In. The file mssphtb.dll is the Outlook Microsoft Search (MSSearch) Connector, which provides Windows Search email indexing.

Note:

If you set this registry value, include the two default DLL file names. These file names are not automatically added to the list.

Description

Controls the behavior of Virtual Vault when an item is opened.

If the request to open the item comes from one of the named DLLs, then the opened item contains only header information. The Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-In does not retrieve the content from Vault Cache or download it from the Enterprise Vault server.

In Enterprise Vault 8.0 and earlier, the Outlook Add-Ins check for the setting in the following order:

  • If the setting exists under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\Vault Cache Store ID\, then that value is used.

  • If the setting exists under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\, then that value is used.

If you use a group policy to configure settings on users' computers, then you can create the setting under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\. Note however that a value that is set under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\Vault Cache Store ID\ takes precedence over HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Client\.

OK so your best bet is to get some client logs when trying to open an item and then contact Symantec Support and provide them the logs and sho what is happening.
They may determine that its RightFax thats at fault in which case you can open a case with RightFax and work with both them and symantec to find a resolution, or maybe you might get a hotfix or workaround etc

I would expect problems with Office 2010 ...  because the Outlook Add-in from EV works differently with that version (and later) of Office.

But you say that Office 2010 on Windows XP works okay, but not Office 2010 on Windows 7?

What version of the Outlook Add-in are you using?

Hi Rob didnt see your post

it states: v 10.0.2.1112 (name field) and in the version column 10.0.9304

what is the latest version?

We have seen Outlook 2010 not function if error logging isnt set to 2 (it wont show up in outlook). This same setting can cause psts to crash in Outlook 2007, which works best at setting 0. This didnt appear related to this issue however.

It looks like the rightfax plugin somehow breaks the vault cacheing.

10.0.3 cumulative hotfix is the latest, but, I don't think it'll make much difference over and above 10.0.2

Take a look: http://thingsilearnedtoday.net/2013/03/21/enterprise-vault-10-0-3-cumulative-hotfix-1-release/

Worth a try, before contact Support

As per the Outlook Add-in entry in the Registry Values guide included in the EV Help:

The Outlook Add-In looks for the Vault Cache and Virtual Vault registry values listed here in the following registry keys, in this order:

1
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
 \SOFTWARE
  \KVS
   \Enterprise Vault
    \Client

2
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER
 \SOFTWARE
  \KVS
   \Enterprise Vault
    \Client
     \VaultCacheStoreID

3
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER
 \SOFTWARE
  \KVS
   \Enterprise Vault
    \Client

Create a String value for VVStubOnlyModuleList with an entry of "googledesktopoffice.dll;mssphtb.dll;MyRightfaxdll.dll" under one of these locations above. Typically it would be the 3rd one as the best option.

Hope this helps :)

Just to add the VaultCacheStoreID key is unique to each user so not an ideal entry to use eg: 4B1698D6C4B2A84087EF7D0F3BF3A7CC

Ok, sounds like you need to open a support case so we investigate this one further. Please provide a full Client trace with Maximum logging enabled and that regkey in place as well if you can.
