seperate Journaling and archiving to 2 ev servers

Never done it before, so I ask to make sure:

I have a customer who installed 1 EV server with both Mailbox archiving and Journaling task on it.
What will be the best steps to add another EV server and move the journaling task to it?
Is there a technote on such a procedure?

Thanks!

Sarah.

you can leave all the data where it is unless there's a compelling reason to move it. create a new vault store, new partition, and a new journal archive on the new EV server. create a new journal archiving task and choose the new archive and the exchange journaling server. should be about 5-6 minutes of effort.

Is the journaling archive in its own vault store or is the journal archive in the same vault store as the mailbox archives?

different vault stores for journal and mailbox archiving.

As far as I know there isn't any technotes reagrding thios topic as normally this is looked at the Professional Services and not technical support.

From my experience:

1. Install and configure the addidtion EV server (with same EV verison and service pack)

2. Stop/disable journal task and remove the journal target on the current EV server. (during this time the journal mailbox will grow so keep a close eye on the journal mailbox).

3. Setup a new vault store for the journal on the new server

4. Perform a move vault store from one server to the other for the journal vault store

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH47388

5. Setup and configure the journal target on the new EV server,

6. Remove the journal task, target and archive on the current EV server and do a clean up (only once you have confirmed that everything is working on the new EV server, this is so that you can perform a roll back to the current EV server if everything does not go to plan).

The above it's not neccessarily the correct way as there are a few different ways of doing this task. Hope it's a kick start to your plan.

or you can configure the new ev server then move the journal archives across, it will depend on which EV server you are running (EV8 SP4 at least) and how large the journal archives are.

Hope this helps.

Ok, I don't think there is one guide/technote to do it but I would start here:

How to move the vaultstore:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH47388

You also need to move the partitions so that they are available on the second server.

So if it's a CIFS share where the partitions are located then you don't need to do anything.

If it's on e.g. an attached LUN to the EV server you would need to reassign the LUN to the second server.

Then you need to move the index for the journal archive as well to the second server.

Should be described in the admin guide on how to move an index to a different location.

Delete the old Journal Task, recreate it on the second server.

Make sure you have good backup before doing this and I would stop all archiving during the procedure so that you know that if you need to go back it's all consistant.

Edit: Hehe LCT answered while I typed :)

I would tend to lean towards Andrew's suggestion and leave the current Journal Vault Store where it is and just create a new Vault Store and Index location on the new EV server, etc...

Combination of :

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH50844 (add new server)

and :

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH47388 (move vault store)

should be the guts of it in my opinion..

Just need to delete the task from the old server, and recreate on the new, and move the index to the new index service
