A customer asked us the following question:

"Does Veritas offer cross-site protection for VMs in addition to Data Protection? How is this different from vMotion and VMware SRM?"

Veritas has a robust product that delivers that sort of protection, called Veritas Resiliency Platform. VRP is a single solution that can simplify all DR needs, including VMware protection. It's similar to SRM, but delivers protection beyond the VMware ecosphere. It can cover both physical and HA environments, replicate using built in functionality, a preferred 3rd party data move, or even by leveraging the replication of NetBackup images. The replication technology happens at the application, host or hypervisor level, not just using snapshots. There are a number of other features of VRP that come in handy, even a way to perform migrations to cloud infrastructures like Azure or AWS.

A interesting new feature in NetBackup 8.2 is the image sharing capability of CloudCatalyst. With that feature, images written to AWS S3 storage can be read by a "Just in Time" NetBackup server in EC2. Once loaded upon that new sever VMWare images can be converted to run on EC2. This can be integrated with VRP to use NetBackup images in AWS Object Storage to automate large scale migrations and failovers.

Hope that helps!
