In celebration of World Backup Day 2018 on March 31st, I spoke with Veritas’ Elias AbuGhazaleh, Director Product Operations and a leader in Veritas’ Customer and Partner Engagement Program. At Veritas, we routinely speak of backup and recovery at an enterprise-level – think, maintaining terabytes over megabytes – so I wanted to understand how Veritas’ approach to data resiliency could apply to the everyman.

What are the leading differences between data management for enterprises versus individuals?

The biggest difference in data between an organization using a Veritas solution and a consumer is data breadth; the average Veritas enterprise customer is processing terabytes, daily – that’s a unit of measurement equal to one million, million, or 1e+12 bytes.

Also, we know all your data is important, whether it is a little or a lot. Whether it is your digital pictures of your family and friends or the source code of a computer software company. So much of our world is digitized, it’s important that we take measures to protect these assets.

If you could provide a single piece of advice to consumers in support of maintaining their data, what would you recommend?

Do a restore! When people backup data without checking the restore process, they run the risk of losing meaningful information, including files, images, songs – you name it. You must ensure the restoration process is functional, routinely, before you depend upon the backed-up files you’re amassing.

And please, take the pledge from World Backup Day to develop a practice of backing-up your data. As you engage your digital devices, daily, your files change; your backup efforts should align to and support this activity.

Please share something particularly exciting about data management at Veritas.

At Veritas, we are able to go beyond simply just data protection. We enable users to harness the power in their data through analytics and visualization, and this is exciting. From our oncoming work in machine learning, to our ongoing efforts to engage and understand our customers’ needs through programs like Veritas’ CPEP, we are making strides to provide individuals and organizations value from Veritas deployed solutions.

In a nutshell, we don’t just help customers manage their data, we also help them extract value from it, ensuring it can be leveraged and applied in the proper areas as required.

We are pleased to be participating in this year’s World Backup Day and appreciate the opportunity to provide customers more than simply data protection. In our digital age, data resilience matters to consumers just as much as enterprise organizations, alike! And I’d like to thank Elias and our CPEP team for being a part of what makes #LifeAtVeritas so good.

Happy #WorldBackupDay!
