Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army landed in Galveston, TX, and informed slaves that the Civil War had ended, and the U.S. had abolished slavery.

Black Employees at Veritas Empowered (BLEVE) commemorates and observes this day of freedom, and has provided ways for all employees to join in the celebration:

  1. Watch the movie 13th: 13th trailer.
  2. Learn more about this important day in America's history.
  3. Support black entrepreneurs across the U.S. or, even better, find a black-owned business in your neighborhood.
  4. Enjoy art created by black Americans, such as the Miss Juneteenth film.
  5. Foodie fact: Red food and drinks are a tradition on Juneteenth, as they are a symbol of perseverance. Read more at NYT Cooking (subscription required) or Saveur.
