Failure to prepare is preparation for failure for GDPR

It will be hard to have escaped the noise about GDPR – have you actually remembered what it stands for yet?

For those who are still playing catch up, it’s the General Data Protection Regulation!

At this point, I should also remind you that it is only 302 days until GDPR comes into force to induce a mild panic attack into an otherwise relaxing read of this blog.

However, it does lend itself to thinking about what route you will be taking to achieve compliance with these game-changing regulations. After all, it affects everyone who stores, manages and processes EU citizen’s data.  Are you a meticulous planner who is already clear on what is needed to be ready by May 2018, or someone who is going to tackle that task on April 30th, setting yourself up for failure?

The key difference with GDPR is that it is not like anything that has gone before, regulatory compliance is not an option, and it is a requirement with hefty penalties for those in breach.  Again, for those who have lived with their heads in the cloud, (or is that multi-cloud these days?) for the last 12months, the penalties are up to €20m or 4% of global revenues.

Interestingly, if the threat of financial penalties, negative PR and crumbling customer confidence are not significant enough to get the heart pumping, maybe you should consider it from another angle…let me explain.

What if I told you that preparing for GDPR could actually save you money if done correctly?  Getting your house in order prior to May 2018 is going to involve locating and minimising the data that you hold today and likely been holding onto for years…even decades if our experience is anything to go by.  In doing so, I will bet that it will provide a path to freeing up some of that precious IT budget to deliver a project languishing on your priority list that delivers tangible business value if only it could be funded.

Maybe you could keep Finance on side by not having to go cap in hand every quarter because spend was higher than anticipated, or procurement of cloud or physical storage accelerated faster than you expected?

We are well placed here at Veritas to help you find those savings by doing the right thing to prepare for GDPR and that is to get rid of redundant, obsolete and trivial data, or ROT as it is affectionately known in these circles.  Not only does this ‘rubbish’ consume space on expensive storage, it’s a breeding ground for risk and compliance issues.  I’ll guarantee you that much of it is being needlessly backed up too, further compounding the issue and taking up time in already compressed backup windows.

Veritas Information Map helps you get quick, broad visibility into the data you are backing up with NetBackup and storing in Amazon S3.  Before long, we will extend your vision further to encompass a range of on-premises, cloud, structured and unstructured data stores.  Better still, we are able to begin presenting you with a map of your data estate, complete with an understanding of what data lives where, and who it was created by, age and size data within 24hrs.

Quick to setup, a low total cost of ownership and with the simplicity and power to quickly help you locate your data and decide where to start your journey towards data minimisation. Those in the know are already visualising billions of files, illuminating their own opportunities to reduce risk, rationalise, consolidate or repurpose their infrastructure and in doing so, drive down their costs.

I’ll leave you to consider how you are tackling preparation for GDPR.  For those who want to get ahead, click here to learn more and register your Information Map proof of concept.
