5220 rehydration how to

Michael_Fisher

We have 2 5220s, one production replicated to on at our DR site. I have been requested to rehydrate the DR appliance. Where can I find instructions on how to accomplish this and rehydration in general?

Another question: can the backup tapes that are rehydrated be used for restores or does the data have to be put back on the appliance before use?

Thanks

As John says you can edit your DR site SLP to add a duplication step

If you want the images that you already have on the appliance duplicated to tape then just go into the DR NetBackup Admin Console - go to the catalog section - select duplication at the top left - set the date range of backups you need on tape - click Search and once you have the results you can select them (or batches of them), right click and select duplicate - there you choose your tape storage unit, volume pool, retention level etc.

But for all future images just use your SLP

Not sure what you mean by re-hydration? The appliance uses de-duplication and data would only be re-hydrated during a restore or duplication - if you want all of the data removed from the de-dupe pool you would need to duplicate it to tape or basic / advanced disk.

When you duplicate to tape the data is re-hydrated and so the full backup image is written to tape and can be used immediately for restores

I want to make a copy of the backups that are deduplicated on the appliance to tape for external storage. Is rehydration not the way to accomplish this?

The best way to accomplish this is via a Storage Lifecycle Policy (which you are probably already using to get the data to the DR unit).  You would just add an additional step to duplicate from the DR appliance to tape (if you are within a single NBU domain) or at the DR side you would add a step after your Import to duplicate to tape (if using AIR).  If you find that you are having performance issues, you may want to configure some Advanced Disk on that DR unit and duplicate the images there first and then on to tape.

NBU will by default use the Primary Copy to restore from - whether disk or tape.
If tape is not Primary copy and you want to restore from it, there are various ways to do this. See
