Recently we have been upgrading our 5230s to 2.5.3 and have run across an issue. On units that have the extra drive shelf(s) attached there is a possibility that after the install reboot that the hotspare (drive 16) on the shelf will be showing as being in a bad state. The first time it happend we had a CR come swap the drive which didn't 100% fix the issue. Suppor then had to have me run adapter level commands that they declaired are not to be part of the standard admin toolbox. Meaning symantec should be the only folks running them.
Several appliances upgraded later and we had it occur again except to both drive 16s on two shelves. That was when we double checked with support and they were able to bring the drives back up to a spun up and good state without replacing them.
Given how long it can take a support CR to get access to your site depending on protocols it might just be easier to ask support to walk you though the command process to try and bring the disk back online.
