Appliance v2.6.1(.1) documentation missing steps to add expansion shelf to operational appliance.

Firstly, a link, to all appliance documentaton:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC2792

.

My question...

Appendix C, on page 112, of the Appliance v2.6.0.4 HIIC guide, details how to add an expansion shelf to an operational 52xx appliance:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7642

.

...and the 5330 v2.6.1 HIC guide details how to add an expansion shelf to a v2.6.1 5330:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7584

...as does the 5330 v2.6.1.1 HIC guide:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7593

.

...but the 5230 v2.6.1 and 5230 v2.6.1.1 HIC guides do not detail how to add an expansion shelf to an already operational v2.6.1(1) 5230 appliance.

So, my question, where can I find the procedure to add an expansion shelf to an already operational v2.6.1(.1) 5230 appliance?

Hi SDO,

You're right. They have removed that section from the document. Even the diagram showing how to cable it (5230 guide page 35 - Connecting the appliance to one or more storage shelves) was replaced with the text below.

To connect the SAS cables

  1. 1  Connect a SAS cable to each of the two ports marked "SAS_IN" on the storage

    shelf.

  2. 2  Connect the other end of each SAS cable to a SAS port on the PCIe RAID card in the appliance.

  3. 3  When more than one storage shelf is used, connect the SAS_OUT ports in the first shelf to the SAS_IN ports in the second storage shelf.

  4. 4  Do not connect the SAS_OUT ports of the last storage shelf to any device.

Basically there won't be a difference in how to add it. But I'm sure you know that and you're simply pointing out the fact that its not very well documented. I would suggest you raise this by adding some comments in the "Did this article answer your question or resolve your issue?" section on the support page. If you complain there someone will get in touch and maybe they'll fix it :)

Solution yes but there is a Gotcha. If this is the first shelf to be added you must explicitly order the SAS array card upgrade kit which also includes the memory upgrade kit. If you do not you will have no place to plug in the SAS cables on the head unit.
