The NetBackup Appliance is a NetBackup Media Server running on SUSE Linux (special version) and as such Should support the DD.

I haven't seen anything as yet that says it cannot be used but as the appliance has inbuilt de-dupe i have never actually see it used

Yes you can and it works very well.  I have 4 5220's going to a Data Domain 990 using Boost.
