To answer your first question it appears that the tool will move and seed all clients in the selected policy. I probably should be a good idea to separate local and remote clients anyway to facilitate non disruptive backup windows as well as helping to enable accelerator or client side deduplication.

Here is a high level synopsis of the tool:

http://www.data3.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/NetBackup-Appliances-Tackling-Cost-and-Complexity-Th...

The pertinent information is on page 5 and says:

The Migration Utility provides users with the ability to choose what workloads to redirect, then performs non-disrupted seeding of the appliance, and optionally automates the policy conversion. The user has the flexibility to choose which backup policies to migrate, and the duration and the start time of the seeding window. The utility predicts how much can be accomplished in the window by assessing past performance.

The utility handles the creation of the image work list for seeding and the policy conversion. All of this activity can be done while the system performs the standard daily backup and deduplication functions. Progress can be tracked in the Migration Utility pane.

What excatly does this migration tool do  ???

Migration job details are available only after the job has completed.
Migration Job starting.
bpduplicate info for copy 1

Duplicate started 01/13/15 13:28:08
Activity monitor job id = 2117386
INF - Skipping copy 2 of backup id server1_1420923601, is not required copy 1.

INF - Initiating optimized duplication from @aaaa6 to @aaab2
INF - Duplicating policy Site1bakupschedule Weekly-Full backup id server1_1420923601 copy 1 created on 01/10/2015 22:00:01 on source path @aaaa6
INF - host MedisServer2 backup id server1_1420923601 optimized duplication succeeded.

INF - Duplicate of backupid server1_1420923601 successful.

INF - Status = successfully duplicated 1 of 1 images.

Migration transfer rate was 4785.278 MB/sec

Does it just Duplicate the images to the other storage?

Does it seed the dedupe pool of the secondary storage  ?

Does it reconfigure the policy to start using the new media server ?
