Netbackup Master Server migration from Appliance to Appliance

Hi guys,

I have an Netbackup Appliance 5230, this appliance is a Master and media Server. I´m going to buy a 5240 appliance in order to replace the first one. I´m trying to find some technote or forums how to migrate catalog and images.

The first appliance is going to be moved to remote site, and the new one is going to place in the primary site.

Does anyone know how to do this? Please some ideas.

@avillavicencio

I have moved your post to the NetBackup Appliance forum for better visibility.

I notice that you have selected version 8 - does this mean that 5230 and 5240 are both on Appliance version 3.0 or later?

Please tell us about the 5230 -
Which size is the Appliance (head unit only or with storage shelve(s))?
What is the used space in the Dedupe Pool?
Are you duplicating backups to tape (or other secondary storage)?

What is the plan with the 5230 at the remote site?
Will it be a media server under the new 5240 master/media?
Or another master with AIR between the 2 sites?

Hi dear Marianne,

I notice that you have selected version 8 - does this mean that 5230 and 5240 are both on Appliance version 3.0 or later?

A: Yes, both 3.1
Which size is the Appliance (head unit only or with storage shelve(s))?

A:This is a 27 TB Netbackup appliance
What is the used space in the Dedupe Pool?

A: 20 TB (Dedupe pool) / 10 TB used
Are you duplicating backups to tape (or other secondary storage)?

A: No.

What is the plan with the 5230 at the remote site?

A: The current 5230 Appliance will be a replication targer appliance, just target because at the remote site there is few servers.
Will it be a media server under the new 5240 master/media?

A: The current 5230 appliance has both roles(master/media) and the new 5240 appliance will have the same configuration.
Or another master with AIR between the 2 sites?

A: No

This whole procedure is because we want newer techonology at the production site and the old 5230 appliance as replication target appliance. The key here is we must move images to new appliance because there is a bandwidth limitation so if we need to restore information we have to do it from production site.

One option is, build the 5240 appliance and setup AIR between your old 5230 and new 5240. Once all the data replicated and imported to 5240 appliance, you can ship 5230 to remote location and configure as replication target. If you want to keep the same data in target as it is on 5240, you dont have to delete anything on 5230. That way 5240 will not replicate all the data again and send only unique on wire to the target appliance. 5230 is already end of sale. This is a good option to keep 5240 in production site.

Configure new 5240 appliance with same hostname as 5230 with different IP address

Run rsync from 5230 to 5240 ; consult veritas for exact command

Shudown 5230 once catalog is fully synced.

Bring up 5240 and assign 5230's IP address.

For Data, It will be good to let it expire on its own retention

I have never seen or heard that Veritas supports rsync for Appliance migration.
How would you choose which folders or filesystems to rsync?

I like the method suggested by @smsaccet1.
It will not be possible to use SLPs to AIR images across.
nbreplicate must be used from cmd.
